Peanut Butter, Banana, Cocoa and Coffee Smoothie

This Peanut Butter, Banana, Cocoa and Coffee Smoothie is out of this world, you guys!  There’s absolutely no refined sugar and yet it is still deliciously sweet-like.  It’s rich in flavour from cocoa & espresso powders and you’ll think that you’re drinking something way more indulgent than it actually is.  So good!

Hi guys!  How was your weekend?  It was super cold around here, but you know what?  That didn’t stop us from breaking out the bbq!  Woot woot!  I cooked ribs and finished ’em on the grill (well, hubby finished ’em on the gril….hehehe).  It was too cold out for me and hubby was only happy enough to put on his warm clothes and brave the bitter cold.  I was looking at him from the inside giving him an enthusiastic thumbs up 😀 On the weekend I have a little more time to cook and often go for things that take a little more time or are a little more indulgent.  Weekdays, it’s all about the healthy stuff, like salads, seafood and, of course, smoothies!

A little while back I started to get so tired of my regular ol’ breakfast.  As I said ‘I’ve hit my breakfast bar breaking point.’  So, I totally had to mix things up.  These days I’m riding the smoothie train.  They are super quick to mix up and gets me out the door in minutes (with a delicious drink to boot).

I don’t know about you guys, but every time I head out the door I have an arm load of stuff.  Any day that I have one thing to carry is a good day and I always feel so light….those days are few and far between and don’t even get me started on how heavy my purse is (and I honestly don’t have a clue what’s in there…I could probably get lost in that thing).  It’s about 10 pounds, no doubt.

In the morning, I take a smoothie, coffee and water.  Three drinks!  Yes, three!  Anywho, I thought how ’bout I add that coffee flavour to a smoothie and ‘boom’ one less thing to carry!  Brilliant, huh?  Not that brilliant, buuuuuut it does taste dang delicious!!

Like any smoothie, you just throw all the ingredients in a blender, whiz up and serve up.  Nothing to it, right?  I usually add a scoop of peanut butter protein powder just to give the smoothie a little somethin’ somethin’ and keep me fuller for longer.  But, obviously, that’s optional.

This Peanut Butter, Banana, Cocoa and Coffee Smoothie hits very milkshake-like notes and tastes like a little dessert.  Probably because of the frozen bananas emulating that creamy ice-cream effect and the raw cocoa powder giving that rich chocolate taste.  But, honestly, this is pretty darn healthy and if I can fool myself thinking I can have a little ‘indulgent’ chocolate thing for breakfast, well I say go for it!

Yes, espresso powder! It is such a handy little ingredient and adds so much flavour! I think it’s tradition now that we (or hubby, lol) grill in the winter….makes it all that more tasty 🙂 Thanks Michelle!

You had me at peanut butter and banana then you added coffee and made my heart smile. I haven’t made any smoothies this year and that’s a tragedy. I think this smoothie will jump start my smoothie kick for 2017 🙂

Well that settles it- I need to get some espresso powder NOW! I love this idea!!! You made me laugh about carrying 3 drinks.. I always feel ridiculous in the mornings with all my beverages haha. I drink water and coffee before I leave my house, and then tote hot tea and water to work. And sometimes a fizzy water too!

I absolutely cannot start my day without coffee. I never have time for breakfast before I leave for work, so I sometimes just make a smoothie to go. Peanut butter and banana is one of my favorite combos. I’m going to have to try your version with coffee! And my bag is one scary place – I have no idea what’s in there at this point, but based on the weight of it it’s time to clean it out!

    • Girl Heart Food says:

I hear ya, Rachelle! I always say I’m going to take some stuff out of my purse to make it lighter and then when I start I realize ‘oh, I can’t take that out….or this….or this :D’ so I’m stuck with a way to heavy bag, lol 😀

Dawn, you’ve got my morning coffee addiction, my dessert addiction and my post workout smoothie compulsion all rolled into one in this hear glass of deliciousness! There are times when I’ve thought of upping my green smoothie game these days, and this is the inspiration I needed!
Speaking of inspiration, it’s been barely pushin 60 here in Atlanta and I’ve been all bundled up – not venturing anywhere without gloves – and y’all are engaging in all sorts of grilling shenanigans! Hat’s off to y’all, my friend!

Awesome!! Three great things all rolled into one 😉 Happy you are liking the recipe, Shashi! I think it’s kinda tradition now that we bbq at least once during the winter. Hubby gets all bundled up with warm clothes and a big cap. Plus, it tastes that much better knowing that it is really cold outside 🙂 Thanks, my friend!

Wait, what? You guys had a BBQ? Consider me impressed (and secretly jealous haha!) That must have been a hoot. BBQ smells wafting through the neighbourhood in the middle of winter – awesome. So this smoothie I like very much. I never really became a fan of the ultra healthy smoothies but this tastes like milkshake you say? I don’t doubt that for a second! It looks amazing. Have a wonderful week!

    • Girl Heart Food says:

Yes! We totally had a bbq and it was so good! It was way in the minuses, but ya gotta do what you gotta do for good eats, right, lol 😀 You’d love this smoothie. I think it’s probably my favourite combo! Have a wonderful week too, Jolina!

Now I know you are way up there in the hemisphere, but even if it gets cold down here I got the grill always on (smoker too at times!). LOVE it. But thats lunch and dinner stuff, this however would do nicely any morning. Love the coffee add to boost this bad boy. Happy Monday Dawn!

Lol, my husband will brave the elements to grill too! Me? No thanks… although it’s not really all that cold here now. Glad you guys had an awesome weekend, girlfriend! I tend to eat the same exact breakfast, Monday-Friday, but on the weekends I am game for anything, and these smoothies look like the perfect way to start a lazy day! I could totally sip on these delicious, flavor packed smoothies while I lazily plop myself on the couch and try to wake the F up. 😉 Love that these are refined sugar free! I’ll take a pitcher please! Cheers, sweets!

Hey! We had ribs too…although we were not as fearless as you guys – we dialed the phone and the kids kindly offered to go grab our favorite Dinosaur BBQ! However, there’s no doubt your homemade out did our dinner! You know I’m all over this smoothie! A breakfast treat after my own heart! I can’t get my day started without a cup or two of joe – and now I can have it as a yummy treat! Have a great week, my friend! XOXO

That sounds good too and perfect when you’re not in the mood to cook. And you can’t beat ribs either way, can ya 🙂 ? Yay! Thanks Annie…I thought you would like this one. Have a great week too! XOXO

  9. Karrie/Tasty Ever After says:

Yay to combining drinks so there’s less to carry in the morning 👍 Coffee, chocolate, & banana is always a great combo so I’ll be trying this smoothie very soon. B should get a trophy or something for braving the harsh cold to BBQ you guys dinner. At least you made him some yummy pudding. Lol! 😁

  10. David @ Spiced says:

I love that you guys got out these in the winter and cooked ribs on the grill! Any leftovers?? I could seriously go for some grilled deliciousness tonight. 🙂 I totally hear ya on the breakfast boredom thing. I switch back and forth from cereal and yogurt/granola, but I get tired of those two options. I do always have a coffee in there, though, so maybe I need to try incorporating that coffee into breakfast. Cereal with coffee on top! Haha…just kidding. This smoothie sounds amazing, Dawn! I need to give it a try soon!

Unfortunately no leftovers! It was just too good! But, if we did have any, I would gladly send some your way 😉 Cereal with coffee on top? Hahaha….don’t know about that 😀 Thanks David! Happy Monday!

Happy Monday, Dawn! Hope you had a great weekend! And yay for breaking out the grill! Ribs on the bbq are the BEST! And my husband is the griller too…I refuse how to learn, mostly because I know I’ll probably ruin whatever is on there, and my husband does a pretty good job as “the grill master” haha. I feel you about purses being so heavy! Mine is the exact same way, and it doesn’t help that I like the bigger bags where it is possible to stuff a small child in there lol! Your idea of combining coffee and a smoothie together is just perfect! I absolutely LOVE this combination! Pb, banana and chocolate is the best, but throw some coffee in there, and I’m wowed. What a pretty drink, friend! Pinning to try! Hope your Monday is off to a great start!

My husband does most of the grilling too. He does such a fantastic job, why mess with a good thing 😀 Yay for bigger bags; there’s waaaaay too much stuff to carry all the time, so what’s a girl to do ;)? Thanks for the kind words and Pin. Hope you’re having a great Monday too!!
