Glass of chocolate peanut butter smoothie.

If you’re looking for a smoothie that tastes kinda like a milkshake or dessert, try this chocolate peanut butter smoothie with banana! With the addition of espresso powder and protein powder, this smoothie is incredibly rich in flavour and makes for a delicious breakfast or snack!

Glass of chocolate peanut butter smoothie.

    Hi friends!

This chocolate peanut butter smoothie hits very milkshake-like notes and tastes kinda like a dessert smoothie.

It’s probably because of the frozen bananas emulating creamy ice cream and cocoa powder giving that rich chocolate taste.

A little while back I started to get so tired of my regular ol’ breakfast. So, I had to mix things up.

I don’t know about you guys, but every single time I head out the door I have an arm-load of stuff.

In the morning, I take a smoothie, coffee and water. Three drinks! Yes, three!

Anyhow, I thought “how about I add that coffee flavour to a smoothie?”

Now I have one less thing to carry! Brilliant, huh? Not that brilliant, but it does taste dang delicious!! It makes for a wonderful breakfast smoothie, post-workout smoothie or snack.

Like any smoothie, you just throw all the ingredients in a blender, whiz up and serve. Nothing to it, right? Now, don’t ya want one?

Why We Love This Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie

    • Like most smoothies, it takes minutes to whip up.
    • The recipe can easily be doubled.
    • It makes for an easy breakfast or snack.
    • Chocolate peanut butter smoothie. In other words, it tastes amazing!

Do I Have To Use Protein Powder?

Not at all! You can omit should you wish and the smoothie will still taste delicious.

    Can I Use Dairy?

Of course! You can use non-dairy options like almond milk, soy milk or oat milk. Alternatively, use your favourite dairy milk.

Tip: For a super treat (and to make things ultra chocolatey), use chocolate milk (or sub out some of the regular with chocolate).

    Tips for Making This Recipe

    • Use natural peanut butter to better control the sweetness.
    • Use frozen bananas as this helps create a thick, lush and milkshake-like consistency to the smoothie. These are some tips on how to freeze bananas.
    • If you need to thin things out, add a little more milk.
    • If you want things sweeter, add some maple syrup to taste.

UM espresso powder?! I definitely need to get my hands on that asap! This smoothie sounds perfect – a little caffeine, a little PB & banana – totally up my alley! Also love that you still grilled! Too funny. That is dedication right there.

Yes, espresso powder! It is such a handy little ingredient and adds so much flavour! I think it’s tradition now that we (or hubby, lol) grill in the winter….makes it all that more tasty 🙂 Thanks Michelle!

You had me at peanut butter and banana then you added coffee and made my heart smile. I haven’t made any smoothies this year and that’s a tragedy. I think this smoothie will jump start my smoothie kick for 2017 🙂

Well that settles it- I need to get some espresso powder NOW! I love this idea!!! You made me laugh about carrying 3 drinks.. I always feel ridiculous in the mornings with all my beverages haha. I drink water and coffee before I leave my house, and then tote hot tea and water to work. And sometimes a fizzy water too!

Yes! Espresso powder is awesome! I always feel ridiculous too. Like, how much can one person drink? At least we’re hydrated, right 😉 ?

I absolutely cannot start my day without coffee. I never have time for breakfast before I leave for work, so I sometimes just make a smoothie to go. Peanut butter and banana is one of my favorite combos. I’m going to have to try your version with coffee! And my bag is one scary place – I have no idea what’s in there at this point, but based on the weight of it it’s time to clean it out!

I hear ya, Rachelle! I always say I’m going to take some stuff out of my purse to make it lighter and then when I start I realize ‘oh, I can’t take that out….or this….or this :D’ so I’m stuck with a way to heavy bag, lol 😀

Dawn, you’ve got my morning coffee addiction, my dessert addiction and my post workout smoothie compulsion all rolled into one in this hear glass of deliciousness! There are times when I’ve thought of upping my green smoothie game these days, and this is the inspiration I needed!
Speaking of inspiration, it’s been barely pushin 60 here in Atlanta and I’ve been all bundled up – not venturing anywhere without gloves – and y’all are engaging in all sorts of grilling shenanigans! Hat’s off to y’all, my friend!

Awesome!! Three great things all rolled into one 😉 Happy you are liking the recipe, Shashi! I think it’s kinda tradition now that we bbq at least once during the winter. Hubby gets all bundled up with warm clothes and a big cap. Plus, it tastes that much better knowing that it is really cold outside 🙂 Thanks, my friend!

Wait, what? You guys had a BBQ? Consider me impressed (and secretly jealous haha!) That must have been a hoot. BBQ smells wafting through the neighbourhood in the middle of winter – awesome. So this smoothie I like very much. I never really became a fan of the ultra healthy smoothies but this tastes like milkshake you say? I don’t doubt that for a second! It looks amazing. Have a wonderful week!

Lol, my husband will brave the elements to grill too! Me? No thanks… although it’s not really all that cold here now. Glad you guys had an awesome weekend, girlfriend! I tend to eat the same exact breakfast, Monday-Friday, but on the weekends I am game for anything, and these smoothies look like the perfect way to start a lazy day! I could totally sip on these delicious, flavor packed smoothies while I lazily plop myself on the couch and try to wake the F up. 😉 Love that these are refined sugar free! I’ll take a pitcher please! Cheers, sweets!

Hey! We had ribs too…although we were not as fearless as you guys – we dialed the phone and the kids kindly offered to go grab our favorite Dinosaur BBQ! However, there’s no doubt your homemade out did our dinner! You know I’m all over this smoothie! A breakfast treat after my own heart! I can’t get my day started without a cup or two of joe – and now I can have it as a yummy treat! Have a great week, my friend! XOXO

I love that you guys got out these in the winter and cooked ribs on the grill! Any leftovers?? I could seriously go for some grilled deliciousness tonight. 🙂 I totally hear ya on the breakfast boredom thing. I switch back and forth from cereal and yogurt/granola, but I get tired of those two options. I do always have a coffee in there, though, so maybe I need to try incorporating that coffee into breakfast. Cereal with coffee on top! Haha…just kidding. This smoothie sounds amazing, Dawn! I need to give it a try soon!

Happy Monday, Dawn! Hope you had a great weekend! And yay for breaking out the grill! Ribs on the bbq are the BEST! And my husband is the griller too…I refuse how to learn, mostly because I know I’ll probably ruin whatever is on there, and my husband does a pretty good job as “the grill master” haha. I feel you about purses being so heavy! Mine is the exact same way, and it doesn’t help that I like the bigger bags where it is possible to stuff a small child in there lol! Your idea of combining coffee and a smoothie together is just perfect! I absolutely LOVE this combination! Pb, banana and chocolate is the best, but throw some coffee in there, and I’m wowed. What a pretty drink, friend! Pinning to try! Hope your Monday is off to a great start!

My husband does most of the grilling too. He does such a fantastic job, why mess with a good thing 😀 Yay for bigger bags; there’s way too much stuff to carry all the time, so what’s a girl to do? Thanks for the kind words and Pin. Hope you’re having a great Monday too!!
