This easy mortadella sandwich is one delicious Italian sandwich piled high on toasty bread with arugula, juicy tomato, banana peppers, roasted pepper, cheese and thinly sliced red onion. Shake up your lunch routine with one epic, belly-satisfying sandwich!

Hi everyone! Have a good weekend? We did a few odds and ends around the house and a little relaxing too. Just what the weekend should be about, right?
The weather still hasn’t warmed up, but I’m still optimistic that a warm breeze will blow our way. I have all my summer shoes out of hibernation and ready to wear. Plus, I even made a homemade body scrub to get my little feet in tip top shape.
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen a pic in my stories from a couple weeks ago. You may have also seen me being silly this past weekend with my camera filter, LOL.
Anyway, onto this mortadella sandwich!
This easy lunch recipe is something hubby and I regularly enjoy, usually for a quick weekday dinner with soup or a hearty lunch on the weekend.
What Is Mortadella?
Mortadella is basically Italian luncheon meat made from pork and originating from Bologna, Italy. I lovingly call it “Italian bologna.”
This recipe is like an ultimate bologna sandwich! I love it on a sandwich for lunch or dinner (of course), but serve it on a breakfast sandwich with a fried egg? Heavenly!

What I love about this mortadella sandwich is all the flavour-packed ingredients that go along with it, especially the roasted red pepper and red onion.
I love raw onion on a sandwich or burger. Don’t get me wrong, I do love caramelized or cooked onions too, but the pungent raw onion is so good. Though, it may not be your best choice on a first date or something.
Tips for Making This Delicious Sandwich
- Use a good quality, crusty bread and toast well.
- I use light mortadella in this recipe, but you could also use the regular version.
- Fold over each slice of mortadella, rather than layer on the sandwich. It gives a nice look and texture to the sandwich.
- Dab the banana peppers and roasted red pepper with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
- I use cheddar cheese, but provolone or Asiago would work lovely too.
- The instructions for this Italian sandwich makes one sandwich. Making for more than one person? Just adjust the ingredients accordingly.

What To Serve With a Mortadella Sandwich
Looking for sides? Any of these pair great with this sandwich:
- Black olives
- Pickled green beans (have you tried? Yummy!)
- Pickled onions
- Potato chips
- Pickle

Thanks a whole bunch, Dana!! We love it around here! Nothing like a sandwich piled high, is there?

Yay! The mysterious (haha!) mortadella sandwich post is back! Italian food is always a big hit around here, and I love a good sandwich…so I know this mortadella sandwich wouldn’t last long in our house! In fact, we just got back from Italy a couple of weeks ago, and we stopped by a lunch place that made similar sandwiches…except they were as big as our faces! Love this flavor combo. It would make a great lunch on a warm summer day!
Girl Heart Food says
Indeed 😉 It doesn’t last long around here either…can’t beat a sandwich piled high with toppings, can ya? Thanks David! Hope you’re having a great weekend!

Oooooh momma, this sandwich is what lunch-y dreams are made of! I can’t eat the bread at the moment, but I can use the ham as my tortilla and make it into a wrap!! YUMMM.
I’m with you on homemade sugar scrubs. They are amazing, however, I can’t use coconut oil. I tried it once and broke out with zits over my entire body. It’s really weird to see whiteheads on your arms, stomach, and legs. I CAN, however, use grapeseed oil!
Amazing recipe, PINNING!

Hahaha – you’re too funny, Christina, but I have to agree with ya 😉 Oh no about the coconut oil!! That ain’t good! I heard avocado oil was good too! Thanks so much – hope you’re having a wonderful weekend 🙂

This looks incredible! I could totally imagine having this as a breakfast sandwich with a fried egg like you suggested, great idea! Definitely more tasty than my everyday boring “healthy oatmeal” haha.
Girl Heart Food says
Thank you so much Natanja! Mortadella is so yummy on a breakfast sandwich too! Hope you have a wonderful weekend 🙂

I love it when a sandwich is so piled high with toppings that you’re not quite sure how you will eat it! This one looks so good Dawn! Hoping the weather warms up soon! While I love a good excuse to stay inside and have fun in the kitchen, a little warm weather soon would be nice!
Girl Heart Food says
Haha – the messier, the better, right?! Thanks Leanne! Let’s hope for some nice weather soon!

I love mortadella! Need to get my hands on this sandwich right now!! I was never a fan of raw onions in sandwiches but have developed an affinity for raw red onions in recent years. I too love the bite it provides!
