When you’re looking for a quick and easy dinner recipe that’s sure to please, then these ground chicken tacos are it! Paired with your favourite taco toppings, it’s such a delicious meal that can be on the table in about 30 minutes.

Who can say no to tacos? I certainly can’t. It’s such an easy meal to put together, they’re equally perfect for busy days or casual weekend dinners, and they always taste amazing. Plus, you can customize the tacos with whatever your heart desires.
I always enjoy meals where I can build my own special bite. I guess that’s why I’m such a big fan of things like tacos and chili (I pile on the toppings). What taco toppings do you enjoy? For me, I think cheese and onions are a must!
Ingredients
- Olive oil
- Yellow onion: Sautéed onion adds some aromatic flavour and a bit of texture to the taco meat. However, if you like, you can omit it and simply add a little bit of onion powder to the ground chicken as you are cooking it.
- Ground chicken: Ground chicken is pretty neutral in flavour, meaning it takes on flavours so well. It’s a great protein to use in these tacos.
- Taco seasoning: I used homemade taco seasoning, but feel free to use a store-bought variety.
- Tomato paste: If you don’t have tomato paste, you can use salsa.
- Chicken broth: Helps to deglaze the skillet and adds some moisture to the ground chicken taco meat. You can use water instead, but chicken broth is the better option, if you ask me, because it adds a little more flavour.
How To Make Ground Chicken Tacos
Here is an overview of how to make ground chicken tacos (full details are in the recipe card below)
- Sauté some onion until softened.
- Add the ground chicken and season with taco seasoning.
- Cook the ground chicken until it’s fully cooked through.
- Stir in some tomato paste.
- Pour in the chicken broth and cook until it’s absorbed.
- Serve the yummy ground chicken on flour tortillas with yummy, colourful taco toppings.
What To Serve With It
Though these ground chicken tacos are nice and hearty all on their own, I always love to serve them with a side or two. I particularly enjoy serving them with any of these:
- Corn and black bean quinoa salad
- Tortilla chips with salsa and guacamole (my fave!)
- Baked fries
- Grilled corn
- Black bean and sweet potato soup
Tips and Variations
- Taco seasoning: As mentioned, for these ground chicken tacos I used homemade taco seasoning (which is salted), but you can use a store-bought variety if that’s what you have on hand or prefer. Keep in mind that brands vary in the amount of salt they have (some might not even have any). Once the chicken is cooked, give it a try and add some salt to taste, if you feel it needs it.
- Taco party: Make dinner fun by arranging bowls of your favourite taco toppings and getting everyone to build their own perfect taco.
- Craving extra texture? Instead of flour tortillas, try hard shell tacos. These cheese flavoured taco shells are really yummy (not sponsored).
- Mix up the protein: Ground turkey is a great substitute for ground chicken.

Ground Chicken Tacos
Ingredients
Ground Chicken Taco Meat
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small yellow onion, peeled and chopped
- 1 pound ground chicken
- 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- ½ cup chicken broth
For Serving
- 8 small flour tortillas, warmed per package instructions
Taco Topping Ideas
- Salsa
- Sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
- Hot sauce
- Guacamole, or sliced avocado
- Sliced raw or pickled red onion
- Chopped tomatoes
- Shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the ground chicken to the skillet, then sprinkle over the taco seasoning. Cook, breaking the ground chicken into small pieces as it cooks and stirring occasionally, until it's fully cooked through, about 8 to 10 minutes.
- Stir the tomato paste into the ground chicken, then pour in the chicken broth. Give everything a stir and cook until the broth is absorbed, about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Serve the ground chicken on tortillas with your desired taco toppings (the topping ideas mentioned are merely suggestions; use what you like best). Enjoy!
