Pumpkin Pie Smoothie

This Pumpkin Pie Smoothie is pumpkin pie in drinkable form.  Pure pumpkin puree is combined with banana to create a silky smooth texture and then classic Fall flavours of cinnamon, nutmeg and maple syrup are added to really amp up the flavour.  This is made in about 5 minutes and, surprisingly, not loaded with sugar!

Hey everyone!  How was your weekend?  Have any good eats?  Tell me all about it!  This past weekend something unusual happened to me…I had a minor allergic reaction!  So, it was Friday night and hubby and I had just finished a late dinner (we typically eat later on the weekend), we were sitting back watching tv, having a glass of vino and a cookie (’cause that’s how we roll- wine and cookies, lol🍷🍪<——and, side note, I have had that particular cookie before.  Anywho, out of nowhere, my chest started to get red and super super itchy.  Hubby said, ‘I bet it’s the wine.’  WHAT?!?!?!  My world stopped.  Everything went in slow motion, like The Matrix.  After I awoke from fainting (#neverreallyfainted<—being dramatic 😉 ), I slowly turned my head towards him and I have never been as serious in my entire life….’shut your mouth.’ No, it couldn’t be.  It probably was the cookie, right?  How dare he say such a thing 😳? Ok, ok, in classic Dawn style I may be a tad very dramatic here, but can you feel where I’m coming from?  I’m like freakin’ Gollum in ‘Lord of the Ring‘….wine, ‘the precious.’  Fast forward and hubby gave me a Benadryl and the itchiness went away👍 I was a-ok after that.  I don’t know what happened; maybe it was our dinner?   Yes, it was dinner…or dem cookies 😀 Yeah, yeah, that was it😐.

Now, I have that off my chest (quite literally),  here goes what you came here for!  Ok, first Fall recipe of the season!  Who’s excited?!  I know I am!  All the pumpkin! All the maple syrup!  All the cinnamon infused drinks, maple syrup drizzled cakes and cookies for me!  Ok, ok, you can probably tell I LOVE fall.  Favourite season hands down.  So, anyway, I made a delicious pumpkin dessert and opened up one of those huge cans of pumpkin puree.  I had some leftover and wanted to use it ASAP.  I didn’t want to leave that stuff in the fridge until it grew legs and left, know what I’m sayin’?  Being a fan of smoothies (ok, who isn’t, right?)  I thought how could I convert this puree into smoothie form.  Then, I started thinking what flavours go with pumpkin. Duh.  Classic combos of cinnamon and nutmeg.  Now, I ‘m thinking pumpkin pie. YAS! Winner winner smoothie dinner…or, er, somethin’ like that.

The funny thing is that pumpkin puree in and of itself doesn’t have a lot of strong flavours.  It does have a lovely silky, creamy texture, though and when you mix cinnamon and nutmeg with it,  now you’re onto something.  This Pumpkin Pie Smoothie tastes like a treat, a drinkable dessert if you will, but it is seriously not at all that bad.  There’s no refined sugar and it’s relatively low fat.  What?!  You say.  I know, I know.  I’m not playing tricks on you.  I wouldn’t do that to you guys.  For reals.  Must be magic in dat dere pumpkin I tells ya 😉  I added only 2 tbsp. of maple syrup for the two generous smoothies and the sweetness level was just right for hubby and I; I don’t like things to sweet.  But, if you do, feel free to add a tablespoon or so extra of maple syrup until you get a sweetness that’s just right for you.  There’s banana in here too, but there’s no predominant banana flavour.  I used it mainly to help increase the creamy smooth texture of the smoothie.

And you know what, you literally just throw everything in a blender and way to go.  Done, son!  Can’t get much easier than that, can it?

    Oh no….a potential wine allergy!!!!
It’ll be okay though, I promise. I get allergic reactions to certain wines – nothing major – just eczema-like hives on my face & chest. I usually drink a Shiraz/Syrah and overall have no issues with it. Occasionally when I try new wines I’ll run into a problem. I’ll use the bottle for cooking and stay away from it in the future.
I love all things pumpkin and would love this smoothie. I’ve never had pumpkin pie in drinkable form and suddenly feel like I’ve been missing out my entire life 🙂
Hope you have a wonderful week ♥

Hopefully, it won’t happen again…just have to keep my eye out for it! Good that you know what wine works fine for you! It would be a sad thing if I had to avoid all wine, lol 😀
Hope that you get a chance to try the smoothie soon….I’m sure you’ll love it 🙂 Have a wonderful week too, Amanda!!

I’m all about this smoothie – rich, creamy, warm spices… LOVE! Hope you have a a fantastic Labor Day weekend my dear!

I know….it couldn’t be the wine! Not possible! I’ll have to retest again this weekend…hehehe 😉 I know, love pumpkin season. All the things pumpkin, right? Thanks so much, Kathleen. Have a fantastic long weekend too 🙂

Every year I subject my English in-laws to pumpkin pie, to little avail. They just don’t get it. So, maybe I will have to get them to try this instead! I must say I was worried at first it was going to be one of those monster shakes type of things, but I’m happy I read on. I cannot wait to try this, bring on the fall!

    • Girl Heart Food says:

But pumpkin pie is just so great 🙂 I know I’ve tried certain foods and have not liked, tried again a while later and loved so ya never know…perhaps they will grow to like it one day!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Matt! Hope you get a chance to try the smoothie soon 🙂

Oh no! I’m really glad you aren’t allergic to wine. That would have been tragic! But then again, I hope you aren’t allergic to cookies either…that would be (almost) equally tragic. Hopefully it was just a one-time random thing. And yes, I am SO glad that Fall is almost here. I love everything about Fall…starting with all of the flavors. And this smoothie has everything in it that I love! Maple…pumpkin…real nutmeg. Oh, you are a’talking my language with this one, Dawn! 🙂

It totally would have been tragic! I can’t even imagine. I mean, I wouldn’t want to be allergic to cookies, but wine? Can’t even think about it 😀 !! I’m going to assume it was a one-off thing and not going to happen again…positive thinking, right? Happy you like the recipe, David, and get a chance to try it soon. Yay for pumpkin season! Woot woot! Have a great weekend!

Allergies are a strange thing – especially when we develop them later in life, but surely it could not have been the wine! Never! That is just not a medical possibility 😉 I am all for drinkable desserts. I have only discovered pumpkin puree in a Whole Foods Market last year. Supermarkets here in London don’t seem to have it yet so I am glad to know where to get it from. I don’t think I am ready for fall just yet – probably because we did not have much of a summer in London but when the time comes I am sure I will be ready with a Pumpkin Pie Smoothie in hand 😉

I know! I don’t know the reasoning for developing allergies later in life. Hopefully, for me, it was a one-off thing and won’t happen again…fingers crossed! Normally in Newfoundland our Summers are not always super great and it certainly didn’t start out that way this year, but the past few weeks have been fantastic! I do love Summer, but Fall is my fave….I just don’t like the cold weather and snow that follows. Glad you found where you can get the pumpkin puree and get a chance to try this smoothie. I’m sure you’ll like it 🙂 Thanks so much, Miriam!

wine and cookies and allergic reaction??! no way. clearly it was that salad from lunch right? argh. i have developed an allergic reaction to certain nuts in recent years. it is not pretty and it is not fun. especially since i love nuts! it’s no fun when life doesn’t comply with our wishes. i hope for you it was a one time thing! unlike this pumpkin smoothie! i am all things pumpkin pie. so when you’re telling me i can drink it for breakfast you just won my heart! can’t wait to try!

Yes, yes, it was that salad from lunch 😉 Oh no! Allergy to nuts? That’s too bad 🙁 Yes, this pumpkin pie smoothie is totally acceptable for breakfast! Why not, right? There’s lot of good things in there after all! Thanks so much, Cathy! Have a fantastic week 🙂

  7. karrie @ Tasty Ever After says:

It was probably the wine so you should pack it all up and ship it down to me. I’ll text you my FedEx number tomorrow 😉 Allergicric reactions are no fun so glad all is okay now. Loving this smoothie and all the pumpkin and spices in it. Can’t believe pumpkin recipes are upon us. I haven’t even finished my ice cream recipes and now everyone is moving on to pumpkin! I need to get with the program 🙂

Ice-cream? Now, you’re talking! Even better, wine plus ice-cream? Oh, and some potato chips. Now, I’m hungry 😀 Thanks sweets! xo

Drinkable pumpkin pie! Wow, that’s a great thought and might I tell you a secret. Well not secret per se, but I was not a pumpkin fan until 2 years ago. Crazy right? There, now you know. You cracked me up with Gollum and “the precious” bit, too funny!
I will be holding on to summer for at least another month, as long as I can, or at least before I can post all my already photographed Summery recipes! 🙂
This look super tasty and the chocolate shavings on top sold me.

It is crazy, but I can totally understand. This, coming from someone who didn’t like avocado or cilantro and now I’m in love with both! I guess our tastes, change, hey? Haha…glad you got a little chuckle with the Gollum joke 😉 I was even laughing to myself when I was writing it 😀 I don’t blame ya for holding onto Summer, but I’m still excited for Fall! In the meantime, please send some figs 😉 Please & thank-you..hehehe! Thanks Kevin 🙂

  9. Kathryn @ Family Food on the Table says:

Fall in drink form – yes please!! I love all the pumpkin things all year long. My kids eat homemade pumpkin muffins on a weekly basis, so we’re always in the pumpkin. This is gonna be a great way to use up some of our extra!
But also, I hope you are not allergic to wine! BAH! Probably it was a weird bug or combo of things. I know my husband has had a reaction like that when we were at a wedding and I think it was the alcohol + sugar, or something. Anyway, I’m sure you are A-OK. (Fingers and toes crossed!)

    • Girl Heart Food says:

I can totally eat pumpkin all year long too, Kathryn! Send me some of those muffins, please 😉 I hope I’m not allergic to wine, either! That would be crazy, right? I can’t even imagine, lol 😀 Perhaps, that’s what it was, just a combination or maybe a one-off thing. Thanks so much, girl! xo

  10. Jolina - The Unlikely Baker says:

YES IT WAS DINNER. There is NO WAY it was the wine! Phew. Glad you’re OK! Though I can seriously vividly imagine your Matrix-slow-mo sequence haha. You are too funny. And this smoothie is fall in a glass! I’m in denial that summer is ending so we’re not doing any fall-sy things yet but we’ll definitely grab some pumpkins when the time comes. Have a wonderful week!

    • Girl Heart Food says:

YES, it was! Agreed and high five! I know, right? Matrix all the way, lol!! I love Summer, but Fall is so awesome too. That nice, crisp breeze is the best! And those Fall scented candles…love 🙂 🙂 Have a wonderful week too, Jolina!

  11. Demeter | Beaming Baker says:

Dawn!! I’ve totally been working on a pumpkin pie smoothie too! Lolol. <– Here's me, totally being behind everyone else on the pumpkin recipes! Meanwhile, that allergic reaction sounds scary!! I'm so glad that you're okay, D. Sheesh! I would have been beside myself if I saw you faint. I hope you find out what it was that caused the reaction. Meanwhile, this smoothie looks so yummy and delish!! Plus, I'm always on board for a winner winner smoothie dinner! 😉 Pinning, of course. Have a great week, my dear! xoxo

    • Girl Heart Food says:

Hahaha! So funny! I’m sure you’re version will be FAB 😉 !! While my chest got super red and super itchy, I didn’t actually faint; I was being dramatic because of the ‘could it be the wine’ thing, lol 😀 Thank you very much, Demeter, for your concern! You’re too sweet. And thanks for the Pin! Have a great week too, my friend. xoxo

    • Girl Heart Food says:

Thank you Megan! I didn’t actually faint, thank goodness, I was just being dramatic, lol. But my chest did break out and was very very itchy and red. Hopefully, it won’t happen again!

Hope you get a chance to try this smoothie soon! It’s delish 🙂 Have a great week!

  12. Mary Ann | The Beach House Kitchen says:

Ok so, this smoothie! Yes, winner, winner smoothie dinner! Ha! (We’re both using that line today.) I love the flavors in this smoothie! If it wasn’t 90 degrees here today, I could totally imagine myself drinking it while admiring all the gorgeous fall leaves blowing by! Putting it on my list! Have an awesome week my friend!

Oh mah gaaaa! I’m so sorry you had an allergic reaction, but I’m 99.974% sure it wasn’t the wine — I mean how COULD IT BE?! Wine would never do that to you! It loves you too much! hahahaha. I’m glad you are okay! Anyways, gurl I am with you I LOVE fall I just hate the colors of fall food… Orange, brown, yellow. BLAH. So not inspiring. While they taste fab, the colors are just so drab. <– 10 points for rhyming! Anyways, I love that you mixed this pumpkin pie smoothie with bananas! Now this is a pumpkin flavored drink I could get behind!! Gimme! Cheers, sweets!

Right, it couldn’t have been the wine….we, like bffs, lol 😀 I hear ya about the colours of the food, but everything else just rocks my boat! Then again, we do have dogberries around here that grow in the Fall and they are a beautiful bright red/orange colour. Thanks so much, Cheyanne! Have a wonderful week, my friend 🙂

  14. Gayle @ Pumpkin 'N Spice says:

Oh no! I wonder what the reaction was caused from! Hopefully not the wine! I’m lucky that I don’t have any allergies that I know of, and I hope it stays that way. I feel bad for those who are allergic to the foods that I take for granted.
And HOORAY for pumpkin season! We’re fall twins today! I am so excited for fall and cooler weather, but not for what comes after that (winter) haha. This smoothie looks SO good, Dawn! I’ve never made a pumpkin pie smoothie before, so this sounds perfect. I love the frozen banana in here to give it a touch of creaminess. Pinned and can’t wait to try out! Hope your Monday is off to a great start!
