Loaded with plenty of chopped dill pickles and dried dill, this dill pickle tuna salad sandwich is perfect for dill pickle lovers. For added flavour and crunch, there’s salad greens and corn chips. Talk about a satisfying lunch!

No doubt about it, I could eat a sandwich every single day, especially when it’s on some good bread. For me, it just hits the spot.
Well, truth be told, I adore bread in and of itself. Usually, when I get a loaf of freshly baked bread from my local bakery, I have to resist devouring half the loaf myself all in one sitting. When I can restrain myself, LOL, I love to put together a comforting sandwich.
When I think of classic lunchtime sandwiches, egg salad sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches and tuna salad sandwiches are definitely ones that come to mind. Tuna salad is not something I particularly went for growing up, but I absolutely adore them these days.
This dill pickle version of tuna salad is a little twist on the classic. Nothing too out there (because a classic is a classic for good reason), but it has a few special additions that just makes that lunchtime meal a little more exciting, ya know?
Ingredients
- Canned tuna: I prefer to use canned tuna in water. You can certainly use canned tuna in oil if you like. Your sandwich will just be a little richer in flavour. If you want to get rid of some of the oil, you can drain the tuna, give it a rinse under fresh, cold water and then drain again.
- Mayonnaise: This recipe calls for three tablespoons of mayonnaise. Use regular or a lighter variety, whatever you have on hand or prefer. You can also sub out some of the mayonnaise for plain Greek yogurt if you like.
- Green onion: Adds a pop of colour and freshness to the sandwich. Chives would be a great substitute.
- Dill pickle: For this tuna salad sandwich, I used one medium to large dill pickle. You can use a little more if you want more pickle flavour.
- Seasoning: Seasoning is kept quite simple with dried dill weed, garlic powder, salt and black pepper.
- Sandwich bread: Use your favourite variety. I used a seeded bread for some extra flavour and texture.
- Salad greens: Again, use what you like. Some yummy options are spring mix (baby greens), romaine lettuce, baby spinach and baby arugula.
- Corn chips: Add a fantastic crunch and flavour to the tuna salad sandwich. It’s such a lovely addition.
How To Make This Dill Pickle Tuna Salad Sandwich Recipe
Here is an overview of how to make this scrumptious dill pickle tuna salad sandwich recipe (full details are in the recipe card below):
- In a bowl, combine the tuna, mayonnaise, green onion, dill pickle, dried dill weed and garlic powder.
- Stir until everything is nicely combined. Season to taste with salt and black pepper.
- For each sandwich, spread some mayonnaise over one side of each slice of bread.
- Then, for each sandwich, layer the salad greens on one slice of bread, and then top with the dill pickle tuna salad mixture and corn chips. Place another slice of bread over top to form the sandwich. Now it’s time to devour that deliciousness!
Top Tip
Be sure to drain your canned tuna well so it doesn’t make your bread soggy!
What To Serve With It
I don’t drink soda a whole lot. However, when it comes to salad sandwiches, I love to serve it with a carbonated beverage (usually soda, but sometimes carbonated water).
And, of course, it goes without saying, that a big dill pickle and a few potato chips or corn chips on the side would be a tasty addition. If you’re looking for something more substantial, serve the sandwich with a bowl of soup, some dill pickle pasta salad or crispy potato wedges.
Tips and Variations
- Drain well: As mentioned, make sure your canned tuna is drained well so it doesn’t make the bread soggy.
- Meal prep: If you want to do a bit of meal prep (which I love to do, especially for those busy days), you can prepare the tuna salad mixture 3 days ahead of time. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator and then assemble the sandwiches when you are ready to enjoy.
- Chips: I used corn chips and they add an undeniably awesome flavour to the sandwich, but feel free to try kettle potato chips instead. Going with the dill pickle theme, dill pickle flavoured chips would work awesome.
- Serving ideas: Ditch the sandwich bread and serve the tuna salad on big leaves of Boston lettuce, over a bed of salad greens, stuffed inside mini bell peppers, on a tortilla as a wrap or with crackers. So many delicious options!
