Baked barbecue chicken wings are super easy to make and are always a mealtime favourite! The wings are baked until nice and crispy, then coated with a sweet and savoury sauce. One bite and you’ll be reaching for more. These barbecue wings are so incredibly delicious!
Wings are always a favourite for my family. When I’m not sure what to make, I always have a wing recipe in my back pocket and I know I’ll make everyone happy.
There’s just something about wings. They’re easy to prepare and always delicious. Sure, they often make for messy hands (especially saucy wings), but it’s totally worth if, if you ask me … that’s what plenty of napkins are for, right?
I love all sorts of wings, from dry rubbed to saucy, and these baked barbecue chicken wings have been making a regular appearance in our home lately (and for good reason, they’re so yummy!!).
Ingredients
- Cornstarch: Cornstarch is the secret ingredient, if you will, that helps to make the chicken wings bake up extra crispy.
- Seasoning: Seasoning includes chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and black pepper. Simple but delicious!
- Chicken wings: A combination of drumettes and flats are used. You can purchase the wings whole and split (cut) them yourself into the drumettes and flats (discard the tips) or look for wings that are already split. Sometimes in the grocery store they are labeled “party wings.”
- Cooking spray: Before baking, the wings are given a little spritz of cooking spray.
- Barbecue sauce: The main wing sauce ingredient. Use one that you enjoy.
- Blueberry jam: Adds a little sweetness to the wing sauce.
- Yellow mustard: Adds a little tang to the wing sauce.
How To Make Baked Barbecue Chicken Wings
Here is an overview of how to make baked barbecue chicken wings (full details are in the recipe card below):
Make the spice blend and coat the wings
- Combine the cornstarch and seasoning in a food-safe plastic bag, seal the bag and shake to combine everything.
- Place the wings in the spice mixture, seal the bag and shake to coat them.
Bake the wings
- Place the seasoned wings onto a parchment paper-lined sheet pan.
- Place the wings in the oven to bake.
- Halfway through cooking, flip the wings.
- Continue to bake the wings until they’re golden brown and crispy on the outside and cooked through.
Prepare the sauce and coat the wings
- Whisk the barbecue sauce, blueberry jam and mustard together in a bowl.
- Place the cooked wings in another bowl and pour the barbecue sauce mixture over top. Stir or toss the wings in the sauce to coat them.
- Place the wings back onto the sheet pan.
- Bake the wings for a tad longer (or serve them now if you’d rather). Now you have baked barbecue chicken wings that are ready to be devoured. Easy and delicious!
What To Serve With Chicken Wings
- French fries or potato wedges
- Double baked potato
- Mashed potatoes
- Pasta salad
- Caesar salad or garden salad
- Wing dipping sauce: some yummy options for these barbecue wings are ranch, Caesar dressing, chipotle ranch dressing or, of course, barbecue sauce
Tips
- Make cleanup easier: For easier cleanup, don’t skip lining your sheet pan with parchment paper.
- Space out the wings: To ensure the wings bake up nicely, ensure there is a little bit of space between them. You want them to get crispy, not sweat.
- Wing sauce: The blueberry jam and yellow mustard gives the wings sauce some sweetness and tang. If you want to simply coat your wings in all barbecue sauce, that’s perfectly fine too. Just replace the jam and mustard with an equal amount of barbecue sauce.
- Barbecue sauce flavour matters: Since barbecue sauce is such a big part of this baked wing recipe, be sure to use one that you enjoy. Barbecue sauce comes in all sorts of flavours, some being sweet, some being smoky, you get the idea. Just keep in mind that whatever you use will have a big impact on the overall flavour of your wings.
- Make more: If you need to feed more people, you can easily double the recipe. These baked barbecue chicken wings are great for a crowd, especially on game day!
- Crispiness: Once the wings are coated in the sauce, they naturally lose some of their crispiness (they’re still so scrumptious though!). Another serving option, especially if you really enjoy crispy wings, is to bake the wings until crispy and cooked through, and then serve the sauce alongside for dipping (rather than tossing the wings with the sauce).

Baked Barbecue Chicken Wings
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 2 pounds chicken wings, combination of drumettes and flats ("party wings")
- Cooking spray
- ½ cup barbecue sauce
- 2 tablespoons blueberry jam
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper and set aside.Note: If you don't have one large sheet pan, you can use two smaller ones. You want to use something that will allow you to spread the wings out over the pan, with space between each one.
- Combine cornstarch, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and black pepper in a food-safe plastic bag, seal the bag, then shake to combine.
- Pat the wings dry of excess moisture with some paper towels then place them in the bag with the cornstarch mixture. Seal the bag, then shake to coat the wings (you can do this in two batches if you like, just to make sure the wings are well-coated in the cornstarch mixture).
- Place the wings on the prepared sheet pan(s), spreading them out nicely with a little space between each one. Lightly spray them with cooking spray.
- Bake the wings for 30 minutes. Remove the sheet pan(s) from the oven and flip the wings. Place the sheet pan(s) back in the oven and continue to bake the wings for another 20 to 30 minutes until they're golden brown and crispy on the outside and fully cooked through.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce, blueberry jam and mustard.
- Place the cooked wings in a large bowl, then pour over the barbecue sauce mixture. Toss to coat the wings in the sauce. If you want your wings extra saucy, they're ready to be served now. If you want the sauce to get a little tacky and caramelized, place the wings back onto the sheet pan and continue to bake them for another 10 minutes.
- Transfer the wings to a serving dish. Enjoy!

Oh what a great idea to put a BBQ spin on wings! We usually go for hot sauce (buffalo), but BBQ wings sound like something that wouldn’t last long around here. Putting this on the summer menu for sure!!
