Ingredients

Homemade Hot Chocolate

  • 2.5 cups milk -I used 3% or whole
  • 1/2 cup half and half -or milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • pinch salt
  • 1/4 cup good quality unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 oz dark chocolate -chopped small, roughly 56 grams

Whipped Cream

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Suggested Garnishes

  • chocolate shavings
  • sprinkles

Instructions

Homemade Hot Chocolate

  • In a small pot on medium low heat on the stovetop add milk, half and half, sugar and salt. Stir to combine. Heat until warmed and bubbling slightly around edges. Be careful not to scorch the bottom of the pot.
  • Turn off heat and whisk in cocoa powder until smooth and there are no clumps. Whisk in dark chocolate until melted and smooth. Serve immediately in your favourite mug and top with whipped cream and garnish with chocolate shavings and sprinkles (optional). Enjoy!

Whipped Cream

  • Combine heavy cream, sugar and pure vanilla extract in a mixer and, using a whisk attachment, whisk on medium high until stiff peaks form. Alternatively, you can place ingredients in a bowl and use a hand mixer.
