This Sweet-n-Tart Cranberry Kefir Smoothie is where it’s at, my friends! There’s only 6 ingredients (and that’s including ice) and it is absolutely chock full of goodies, including cranberries, strawberries and Kefir milk…not to mention that it’s gluten free & refined sugar free! Makes for the perfect breakfast or afternoon pick-me-up.
Hi everyone! How has September been treating you so far? How was your long weekend? We had a pretty low key one. The weather was amazing, we made lots of good eats, that’s for sure. Towards the end of the weekend, hubby was, like, ‘Dawn, you have to get out of the kitchen! You can’t make anything else. There’s just so much food!’ Maybe I like cooking more than the actual eating part? My love of food is definitely one reason why I work out regularly, though? Speaking of working out, hubby and I are thinking about getting one of those water rowers. Have any of you heard of them or tried? They are supposed to be an awesome workout for legs, core and arms so I’m all over that!
Oh, we watched a wicked show this weekend, too! The second season of Narcos was just released on Netflix this past Friday and we literally blew through it! It’s mostly subtitles and that may turn some people off, but, honestly, after watching it for a bit, you even forget that they are there. I think that the second season was even better than the first. Definitely recommend that one if you’re looking for a new show to watch ?
Cranberry Kefir Smoothie
Ok, onto the recipe, shall we? This Sweet-n-Tart Cranberry Smoothie was inspired by a few things. The simplest is, well, my love for smoothies. Next to that, is the fact that a had a ginormous bag of frozen Costco sized bag of cranberries in my freezer…my excitement of food got the better of me there. And, finally, the main reason for this Sweet-n-Tart Cranberry Kefir Smoothie is that I have been so freaking sick of my regular ol’ breakfast lately. I said to hubby ‘I just can’t eat it anymore; I just can’t.’
Basically during the week days, it’s a pretty boring, basic breakfast. Something to grab and head out the door, know what I’m sayin’? And, it goes a little something like this – coffee, crunchy breakfast bar, and a piece of cheddar cheese. So exciting, hey? You know what? I don’t even know how long I’ve been having this. Probably for years. Yes, you read that right…YEARS! Ok, it has been good, but just last week I was thinking I just can’t eat this anymore; I’ve reached my breakfast bar breaking point. Now, I’m just trying to mix things up a bit so enter Sweet-n-Tart Cranberry Smoothie. Hallelujah! What do you guys like for breakfast?
Smoothie made with Kefir
Like most smoothies, this takes, like, 5 minutes to make (or even less than, really) and it is super tasty. I used cranberries, of course, but also some strawberries to counterbalance the tartness of the cranberries and a super ripe banana to add that creamy texture I love. For the milk component, I used Kefir milk. Now, I don’t know if you can recall when I first tried Kefir milk. It definitely wasn’t love at first taste, I can tell you that. However, me and Kefir milk have become friends. I understand it. It has so many goodies in there and you pretty much can’t even taste the strong yogurt flavour that is Kefir. And, if you do not want to use that stuff, simply swap out for your favourite milk. No biggie.
The end result of this smoothie is something that is slightly sweet, but definitely a bit tart. And that colour is just amazingly beautiful ? We eat with, or shall I say drink with, our eyes and this is just so pretty, wouldn’t ya say?

Sweet-n-Tart Cranberry Smoothie
- 1.5 cup frozen cranberries
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 cup strawberries
- 1 cup kefir milk - almond or soy milk for vegan option
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- ½ cup crushed ice
- Combine all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth ( I like to leave a little texture of the cranberries). Serve and enjoy!
