This Ultimate Cheeseburger is flavourful, filling and, of course, CHEESY! The beef patties are simply prepared with only a few spices and no binder. My favourite part? They’re grilled and topped with copious amounts of cheddar cheese. For the sauce, there’s a delicious roasted garlic mayo and then the burgers are garnished with goodies like tomato, thinly sliced onion, pickle and crispy bacon. Hey guys! How’s it going? Guess what? Today I’m bringing you another fabulous recipe featuring Canadian cheese! This is not just any recipe; it’s an Ultimate Cheeseburger featuring Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar from Prince Edward Island. This cheese is near and dear to my heart. Why? Because Prince Edward Island is one of Canada’s Atlantic Provinces, and so is the Province I’m from, Newfoundland & Labrador. As a child, my family and I would visit Prince Edward Island and we always had the best time!
On our visits to Prince Edward Island I would always (practically daily) visit Cows (ice cream shop). The aromatic smell in there would knock you off your feet. So good! Yes, I was food obsessed even as a kid. Not much has changed, lol. And their logo of the cow is just the cutest.
All this talk of Prince Edward Island reminds me that hubby and I should visit soon with so we can start creating some new memories (with furry child too, of course).
WHAT IS AVONLEA CLOTHBOUND CHEDDAR?
Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar is made, as mentioned, in Prince Edward Island by Cows Creamery. If you’ve ever been to Prince Edward Island you know how beautiful it is. There are rolling hills, ocean almost everywhere you look and red, iron rich soil.
Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar is an award-winning cheese that is aged for 14 months. When I say award winning, I mean lots of awards ever since 2008! For example, Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar won four awards in 2016 alone, two of which were ‘Canada’s Cheese of the Year’ and ‘North America’s Best Clothbound Cheddar’. I can understand why it’s so popular! It’s an all natural, unpasteurized cheese made with milk from Holstein cows from local farms. Because there is ocean all around, the salt air and rich soil contributes to the wonderful full bodied flavour of this firm cheese. When you bite into it, it’s what you would expect from a high quality cheddar – so good!
Like most burgers, this recipe is super easy to prepare. I don’t like to mess around too much with the beef. For the patties, there is just a simple touch of salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and cayenne. They’re formed into 4 ounce patties and grilled for just a few minutes per side. Then, it’s the fun part! Garnish with lots of Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar. This is a ‘cheese’ burger after all, right?
I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy mayo on my burger. Yes, mayo. I amped this one up with roasted garlic. Have you had? Roasting garlic mutes the flavour a tad and what you’re left with is a lovely hum of garlic flavour. It makes for quite the delicious match to those cheesy burgers. If you prefer to use a different sauce, feel free! Ketchup, relish or mustard would work great too!
TOPPINGS – USE WHAT YOU LOVE
For me, a good cheese burger should have three pivotal things – quality cheese, good meat and a toasted bun. The rest is important, but can be adjusted to tastes. My father is a burger purist, meaning he likes meat and bun…ok, maybe a touch of relish or mustard. Me, on the other hand, live for those toppings. They give the burger personality shall we say. What’s your favourite toppings to use on a burger? Have you ever tried anything weird or different? One of my other favourite ways to enjoy one is with peanut butter, jam and bacon. Yes, that combo. No judgement, my friends. It’s good just like this Ultimate Cheeseburger.
How fun would it be to have a burger bar? Next time you have family and friends over, arrange a bunch of toppings on the table, along with condiments and a variety of buns. Grill the burgers and let everyone customize their burger to how they like. Don’t forget lots and lots of Canadian cheese – there’s so much to choose, but this Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar is a great place to start!
