Apple Galette – a fall Favourite! Apples are bathed in butter, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Then, they are wrapped in a buttery pastry blanket. It’s baked until the pastry is golden and the apples are softened. Just don’t forget the ice-cream!
Hey everyone! Bringing you an easy recipe today – a rustic Apple Galette! I’m on an apple kick lately! Earlier this week, I brought you a lovely mixed green salad featuring apples from our very own garden and a delicious artisanal Canadian cheese. Today? Apples in dessert form…after all it’s almost Friday so it’s time to celebrate 😉 And it’s Thanksgiving in the US so a big Happy Thanksgiving to my American friends! Eat some turkey….and LOTS of dressing (aka stuffing) with gravy for me!
Cold Butter Makes for a Flakey Pastry
The main thing with the pastry is to try to keep the butter as cold as possible at all times. So, I start with cold butter, grate it into the flour mixture, combine and minimally handle when forming into a ball. It’s placed in the freezer for a couple of times (ensuring the butter stays cold) before finally going into the oven. This is what keeps the crust flakey and buttery.
I have a confession. I’m not the most patient person in the world. Hubby and I have so much in common, but one place where we differ is patience. He is born with it. Me? More times than not, I want things finished before I even start. Patience is not a strong suit of mine.
Enter Apple Galette. What I enjoy about this recipe (aside from the taste) is that the pastry is no fuss, no muss. You roll it out, place the apple mixture in the centre and wrap the pastry around, rustic style…nothin’ to it! Don’t forget to brush the pastry with an egg wash and a little bit of sugar before you bake!
I love easy recipes like this one that can be prepped in very little time. If you have guests coming for dinner, you could have your pastry ready to go (just keep in the fridge until ready to use) and prep the apples when it’s just about go time. Imagine the scent wafting through your home as this bakes…your guests will never want to leave!
I garnished this one with some walnuts for an extra bit of flavour and texture. How can you go wrong with fruit and nuts anyway?!
Vanilla ice-cream is not necessary here, but totally recommended. It’ll melt on the warm galette and create a lovely ‘sauce’, perfect with a cuppa coffee or tea. Enjoy!
Until next time, take care and chit chat again soon 🙂
