Peanut Butter Banana Bread with Nutella

Banana bread with oomph!  That’s how I’d describe this Peanut Butter Banana Bread with Nutella. Is there anything more perfect than chocolate + peanut butter?  And then go all Elvis-style with banana?  Nope.  Not around these parts.  Prepped in about 10 minutes, the hardest part of this recipe is waiting for this baby to bake.  Then go for it!

There’s a Care Bear on my bed.  More specifically the ‘Loves a Lot’ one.  He is pink with hearts on his belly.  There, I said it.  Hubby gave it to me a couple Christmas’s ago upon my request.  I have a soft spot for stuffed toys.  I remember having a Care Bear when I was a kid, along with Strawberry Shortcake (my ultimate fave) and Rainbow Brite.  These days I just have the bear on the bed and a little piggy and lamb on my dresser…..’cause piggy and lamb<—-say no more, right??

I have a HUGE cedar box that my father made me years ago loaded with toys.  It’s under hubby’s work bench in the basement and I can’t get access to it, but desperately want to.  I know there’s this birthday Hallmark bear that hubby gave me  for my birthday (the first birthday we were together when I was 15).

Also on our bed is a super worn blankie that hubby had when he was a child.  There are holes in it now and it’s just hanging on by a thread.  Buuuuut, I swear, you put that thing over your eyes at night and you will sleep like a little baby.  No lie.

Just recently, on one random Saturday, I was going out shopping and hadn’t been out for a long time just to leisurely look around. Then, thoughts of food starting dancing around in my head.  I couldn’t get it off my brain.  I wanted to go to the grocery store.  I remember the days when I would spend hours going to the mall on Saturday just browsing.  And now?  Now I want to go to the grocery store.  I also take a multi vitamin, need my sleep, make sure I exercise and eat right and wear sunscreen all.the.time.   So, despite not feeling like it 99% of the time, I guess I am an adult, lol.

Anyway, you are probably wondering what toys & random thoughts of food have to do with this recipe.  Well, it’s all about nostalgia.  I like my stuffed toys because it brings back memories of my childhood.  Food can do that too, don’t you think?  Plus, I just LOVE good eats #StoryofMyLife.  Food has memories associated with it.  Maybe it’s a specific time, or a particularly holiday that you only have something, but whenever you think if that specific thing it makes you happy.  Banana Bread definitely puts a smile on my face and puts me in a comfort zone, even just for a few minutes, especially when I eat it straight from the oven.  And just the smell going through the house as it bakes is heavenly!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Bread , while not the very first one, was one of the first few recipes that I had posted on Girl Heart Food.  This recipe here is not an updated version of that one;  I would say that it is more of a slight twist and, boy, was I happy about it!  And guess what?  Today is National Banana Bread Day!  So, in honor of happy memories and yummy banana bread, let’s get to it!

Peanut Butter Banana Bread with Nutella -

Basically, what we are dealing with here is an ooey, gooey, chocolatey layer of Nutella sandwiched between moist, rich banana bread. I mean, c’mon, right?!

Peanut Butter Banana Bread with Nutella -

Just look at it!!!!!! I swear, it took all that was in me not to drink that Nutella like freakin’ hot chocolate.

Now, just top with the remaining batter…..

And bake this baby for about one hour! And then you are left with –

Peanut Butter Banana Bread with Nutella -

I was wearing my infamous fancy pants on that particularly day so I just mixed about 1 tbsp. each of Nutella and Peanut Butter and drizzle over the top of this bad boy.  The only thing that would make this better would be to have with a nice cold glass of milk….and maybe a second slice – just sayin’ 😉  You’re gonna love this one, you guys!

Peanut Butter Banana Bread with Nutella -
  1. Preheat oven to 325F. In a bowl combine flour, oats, salt, cinnamon, baking powder and baking soda. Stir to combine and lay to one side.
  2. In a stand mixer blend butter with sugar until smooth and fluffy, 2-3 minutes. Add peanut butter and blend an additional 1-2 minutes.
  3. Add vanilla extract to stand mixer and blend until combined, 30 seconds or so. Add eggs, one at a time, until just incorporated. Add mashed banana to stand mixer and blend until combined, 1-2 minutes.
  4. Grease a loaf pan with Pam (I used a 9.25 x 5.25 x 2.75 inch size). I also placed a strip of parchment paper in pan and sprayed with Pam and let it hang over sides (makes for easy loaf removal). Pour half of the batter into the pan and spread evenly. Top with Nutella and leave about 1/2 inch or so border around edge. Top with remaining batter and bake 60-65 minutes. Done when a there are no crumbs on wooden skewer when inserted into loaf. Let cool about 15 minutes before removing from pan. Enjoy!
  5. Note: If desired and totally optional, you can mix about 1 tbsp. of peanut butter with 1 tbsp. of Nutella and drizzle over top of loaf.
Recipe Notes

Place Nutella in a microwave safe bowl and melt on high for about 15 seconds or so until it is slightly running and easily spreadable.

I know what you mean….one of my favourite combos! There’s an update on the cedar box; after my post, hubby surprised me and put wheels on it so it is easy to pull out and I was able to access so many toy, most for which are quite old. So many memories brought back as I looked through them!! Have a lovely weekend too, Miriam 🙂

I remember as a kid I had so many age milestones that I thought made you a grown up (the first one was 15, ha!). I’m past all of them, and some days I still can’t quite believe I’m supposed to be an adult. 😉

This bread looks so yummy! Peanut butter and bananas was one of my favorite snacks as a kid, so it definitely puts me in a nostalgic mood. Add Nutella, and I am so here for it. Pinned!

I hear ya, Tracy! Just this past weekend, I picked up the new Nintendo console and the Zelda game, lol 😀 So much fun!
Thank you very much for the kind words and Pin, my friend. Hope you’re having an awesome week 🙂

For the life of me I can’t recall a toy that stands out… maybe because it was too long ago? I was a book geek, and I had a cool chemistry set. I remember once I accidentally dropped the lit bunsen burner, luckily over the garage sink, and crack, splash, whoosh of fire! I was so surprised it literally took the wind right out of me and I couldn’t speak. I just stared at the fire. I remember looking at it and threw a blanket over it and snuffed it out. Not really a toy story, but… As for food, my mom was a great cook and baker. One that stands out is her rolled stuffed steaks, it had the best sauce. Might have to re-create that one! Love this banana bread version, she made it often as well, but the Nutella add in the middle and peanut butter? Count me in! Have a great weekend Dawn!

OMG about the bunsen burner! I can just imagine you staring at it, shocked! I probably would have done the same thing…and maybe scream! Your mom’s rolled stuffed steaks sounds delicious and I definitely think you should recreate that one….love to see it! Thanks Kevin 🙂 Hope you’re having a great weekend!

I had to laugh out loud with your love of ‘stuffies’ (especially Strawberry Shortcake)! Stuffies is the name my son calls all of his sweet stuffed animals. I am always amazed by today’s high-quality ‘stuffies.’ Makes me want to be a kid again! I hope one day he looks back and he is nostalgic about the many days and hours we spent bringing those little stuffies to life. So on to the recipe, amazeballs! I love peanut butter and chocolate together and your photos are making me drool! YUM.

I’m so glad I’m not the only adult who still has her stuffed animals. I forced myself to give away a lot of them, but I kept the ones that are closest to my heart for one reason or another.
This bread looks so lovely and comforting, just like a soft pile of old “friends.”

Wow! Nutella and banana bread. Love chocolate. I played with the tiny toys from the Kinder chocolate eggs a lot. Too bad they are not allowed here, I would have bought some for my son. I also always wanted to have a light saber. It was all about Princess Leia. Now I finally do – my 6 year old son managed to convince me to get him the entire Lightsaber Bladebuilder collection… it is nice to play with him and have my childhood dream fulfilled. Major bonding, almost like sharing a decadent banana bread:)

    • Girl Heart Food says:

Oh, I remember those Kinder eggs! That chocolate was pretty good too 🙂 How cool that your son has a Lightsaber collection! I bet you have just as much playing with it as he does! Thanks so much for stopping by, Milena 🙂

Oh man, I couldn’t agree with you more, Dawn! I feel like an adult these days (ummm…hello, 9pm bedtime and waking up at 6am or before…) but in my heart I’m still a little kid reading comic books and playing with my baseball cards! And food totally does bring back memories. Banana bread absolutely holds a sacred place in my childhood memory…although I am also willing to update that memory to include peanut butter and Nutella. Because, well, peanut butter and Nutella. Holy yum, Batman! This bread looks incredible, and I just wish I had a slice right now with my morning coffee. Hope you and the hubby have an awesome weekend!

It’s so funny, isn’t it? It’s, like, in your head you aren’t quite an adult sometimes, but then there’s other times when you’re just so tired and wore out, lol 😀 Oh well! Thanks so much for the banana bread love, David! Hope you guys have an awesome weekend too 🙂

Peanut butter + chocolate + banana all in one puts a huge smile on my face! I missed the fact that it was nation banana bread day – but with PB + Chocolate involved, I think everyday should be Banana bread day – don’t ya?! 🙂 This bread sounds so good – ugh, I hate to admit it but when I saw you mention Strawberry shortcake I completely missed the part that you were referring to a Care bear and thought you had another recipe here too – gosh – now all I want is PB+Chocolate+Banana bread+Strawberry Shortcake!
My sis used to have a blanket like your hubby’s. She had that thing from when she was a toddler till her first job. Of course by that time it had disintegrated – but she used to take the little pieces that were left of it around in a sandwich bag and sniff them for comfort ever so often – if she knew I shared this shed kick me in ma bootay – so mums the word! Hope you and hubs have a wodnerful weekend! xx

Hmmmmm….maybe I should work on another recipe 🙂 So cute about your sister taking pieces of her blanket around in a little bag. Funny how little things like that can bring back so many memories and are so comforting, but, definitely, mums the word 😉 Hope you have a wonderful weekend too, my friend! xo

I was a big Barbie girl! My cousin, Cabrina, and I could get lost for hours in dressing them and creating dramatic situations using the Barbie Car, Camper, Dream House, etc…! And the food that brings back happy memories… Mom’s angel hair spaghetti and meatballs! (Of course!) 😉 Loving this banana bread! My MIL has a fabulous recipe so we’re spoiled to banana bread on the regular! Thanks for sharing, dear! Have a great weekend! XOXO

Oh, I did love Barbie’s too! I remember keeping that little plastic thing that would be in the middle of pizza boxes and using as a little side table for my Barbies, lol 😀 And, funny story, I would take my brother’s GI Joe’s and make them go on dates with Barbie!! Hahaha….not sure if he knew at the time!! I bet your mom’s spaghetti and meatballs was heavenly! Such as classic, right? Lucky you with your MIL’s banana bread too! Appreciate the kind words, as usual, Annie and sharing some stories. Could talk about that kind of stuff for hours! Have a lovely weekend too! XOXO

I haven’t thought about Care Bears forever – 80s nostalgia! For me, I was all about Hello Kitty – I had this pink eraser that I loved and can still remember the way it smelled.

And speaking of nostalgia – Banana Bread! And then you go and make it that much better with a winning peanut butter and chocolate combo. So good!

I totally agree about certain foods having special memories attached to it. Banana Bread always reminds me of my son Sean. He loves it! I can’t imagine how many loaves I’ve made him over the years. This one with peanut butter and Nutella sounds amazing. Pinning and can’t wait to try! Happy weekend!

OMG, Strawberry Shortcake and Rainbow brite were SOOO my jam when I was little!!!! I had a few care bears and barbies of course, but the former two were my favs. Great minds, yes?! 😉 I love me some ‘naner bread, so this “bread with oomph” is calling my name! I could totally eat the entire loaf myself… in about .2 seconds. Totally normal, right?! I hope you have a great weekend girl! Cheers!

Yummm how could you not love this combination?! The perfect bread! And yes, I totally get you on the childhood toys! My dad has been slowly trying to empty out his basement by bringing over a box of my childhood stuff every time he comes to my house. It’s so fun to see all my old toys, but my dad is totally going overboard and started bringing boxes of my mom’s various holiday decorations. I swear he’s just trying to get rid of everything and hoping nobody will notice!

What a happy trip to memory lane that was! (Care Bears Stare!) Gosh I love that show. I think I had a little Grumpy Bear (so appropriate lol). And yes, I’m all over food and memories. It’s why my blog exists TBH! I’ve branched out so to speak to non-Filipino desserts awwww but now I want to make some home treats. Love love love this banana bread! And the Nutella in the centre just makes it that much more amazing! Happy almost Friday!

  14. Gayle @ Pumpkin 'N Spice says:

Rainbow Brite was my favorite! And so were care bears, cabbage patch dolls, and my little pony, haha! I actually just went to my parents’ house and picked up a bunch of boxes from my childhood and found a few random items like that…I was SO happy! I saved my first cabbage patch doll, and I just can’t bear to part with it. And YES to food bringing back memories and your childhood. Nutella and banana bread are my favorite, so this is calling my name. Looks wonderful, Dawn! I wish I could have a slice (or three) for breakfast. Love the looks of this! Pinned, of course! Happy almost weekend!
