Made with only five ingredients, this Blackberry Coconut Smoothie is made in just a few minutes and is the perfect way to start your morning.  There are super-good-for-you blackberries, banana and unsweetened shredded coconut.  Plus, that colour?  How could you not smile just looking at it?

Hey hey!  How’s it going?  How was your weekend?  Pretty low key around here.  Though, I did watch the series finale of Girls.  Any of you guys watch?  The last season as a whole was one of the best, in my opinion, but I was left a little underwhelmed by the finale.  However, we are back into watching Into the Badlands and that has been awesome so far (no surprise).  We watched an episode of that this weekend and I was sad when it ended; you guys get like that with a favourite show?  We had plenty of good eats this past weekend, including a stop off to a favourite mom-n-pop take out that we used to visit growing up.  We made a visit to our hometown to visit family and knew a visit to that restaurant was in order!  We got fries with dressing (aka stuffing) and gravy and used lots of vinegar.  It was deadly good.  I pretty much inhaled it.  Ever have a craving for something and it doesn’t go away until you give in?  Me?  All the time.  Now with that out of my system, time to reset with healthy food.  Ergo – smoothie!!

A while back, I bought SO many blackberries at Costco, it was insane.  Like ONE MILLION DOLLARS worth (just kidding, you guys) #AustinPowersReference #GeekingOut.  As you’ve probably read here before, hubby and I are on a smoothie kick and trying all sort of delicious combos, like here, herehere, and here.  After buying so many berries, I actually even went back and bought MORE!  #CantStopWontStop

So I finally broke down and purchased a new blender.  I’ve had the same one for years.  I mean, years.  And it started to get kinda funny.  In the morning, I’m usually the one who makes the smoothies for hubby and I.  I would put the fruit, milk and stuff in there and press start and, boy, would that machine suffer.  But, nope, as long as it still whizzed and whirled, I wasn’t gettin’ a new one.  Finally, after pressing start, shaking the machine like there was no tomorrow and not getting a good blend, I said ‘shag it’ and finally got myself a spankin’ new 1500 watt powerhouse.  Woot woot!Blackberry Coconut Smoothie [vegan, gluten free}-

I will always make some sort of smoothie weekdays and also often times on Saturday too when hubby and I are running around doing odds and ends around the house; it makes for a super fast and satisfying snack.  Oh, Saturday, how do I love you?

Do you remember as kids on Saturday morning, you could spend hours on hours mindlessly watching your favourite cartoons and you didn’t have a care in the world?   Sometimes I long for those moments.  Where nothing else matters only right then and there.  No outside worries.  Nothing to do, but be.  Nowadays I’m always planning and thinking what I have to do next.  Hubby says I can’t sit still.  I kinda have to agree with him.  Gimme a glass of wine and I may be able to sit for a few minutes….hehehe.   What do you guys like to do on Saturday? Spill the beans, my friends!

Like pretty much all smoothies, there’s nothing complicated here.  Throw that stuff in a blender and you are good to go.  Plus, you know what’s in there.  No syrups, no crap ingredients, just pure natural goodness.  And, so much cheaper than any smoothie that you are going to buy in a store.  Do you know that my local coffee shop sells a small smoothie for $5?!  What?  I could make a smoothie for a fraction of that price and no line ups.  Score!  Plus, you can totally stay home in your comfy clothes, just sayin’.

This is so pretty!!! I’m so glad it’s smoothie weather again! What kind of blender did you buy? I’m always on the prowl for one I like better- I haven’t been able to talk myself into buying a Vitamix or Blendtec because our place is just TOO SMALL for those big things! But I keep looking at them anyway Lol!

My weekend wasn’t quite as exciting. The Mr. and I ran a bunch of errands ( much needed since he’s been in Japan), went to Barry’s Bootcamp so that I could get my boo-TAY handed to me on a platter, and went for a run (with burpees in the mud at each mile) to this awesome reserve (hills for days!!!) on the ocean. This weekend will be more the same as the Mr. gears up to head to London. But I will have lots of baking in my not-so distant future.

As you can tell from the above, intense workouts are part of our daily routine so smoothies are our lifeblood. Definitely going to need to give this beauty a try (with my scoop of collagen protein. ..of course) and lucky for me we just so happen to have blackberries in the fridge.

Whoa! Talk about a kick butt work out! Love it! I love adding protein to smoothies too (and often a powdered veggie mix) – it kinda turns the smoothie a funky colour, but it tastes delicious 🙂 Hope you like this one, Lynn! Thanks so much!

So I’m not familiar with Into the Badlands? Maybe I need to be? We’re caught up on Better Call Saul, so now we have to wait and watch it weekly. What the heck? I got so spoiled with the ability to just watch the next episode of a show whenever we have time! But we did go start watching The Killing on Netflix to pass the time in between shows of BCS. So far it’s pretty good…but I think we’re only 2-3 episodes in.

Saturdays. Pre-Robbie, our Saturdays would start with a couple cups of coffee while lazily watching the news or whatever. Then we’d wander off to do errands. Now Saturdays involve inhaling a couple cups of coffee, catch the first 5 minutes of the news and then off on some adventure with Robbie. As noted in my last post, we look for things to do with him on the weekends to entertain him. This past weekend it was the Mother Goose Jazz Band at the local library. Seriously. Stop laughing.

Ok, smothies! I love blackberries. Like I might have been right there with ya buying pounds and pounds and more pounds of ’em. Glad you got a new beefy blender to whir those blackberries into this delicious smoothie. Mmmm…smoothies. 🙂

You should check that show out; I love it and so does hubby! I know – sucks when you catch up on a show and then have to wait, like, a week to see the next episode. Haven’t watched The Killing – will check out though, thanks!
Haha- I may have just chuckled just a little with your adventure to the local library. But, I’m sure it was fun, especially with Robbie 🙂 As long as there’s some kind of coffee involved on the weekend (or any time for that matter), I’m good, lol 😀
Thanks for the kind words, David!

I was so excited to see this smoothie on your Instagram! Blackberries are my absolute fave. Can’t wait to try this out! Also, I haven’t yet watched the latest season of Girls so now I’m really keen to get on that!! Have a great week Dawn!

Love this combo, and I love that you shagged the old one. Hilarious. Put a smile on my face with that writing and this flavor combo. Anything with coconut, I am pretty much a sucker. And right now, the blackberries are to die for at the farmers markets. This Saturday we got started packing. We just bought a new house. But our usual Saturdays consist of fun family exploring and hopefully a bbq.

  6. Jolina says:

HAHAHAHA I totally got that Austin Powers reference now I can’t get it out of my head lol. This smoothie looks amazing. And that colour! We like smoothies but our poor blender can’t nearly handle all our smoothie dreams so we’re taking it easy. Maybe it’s time to get me a new toy too! 🙂 I really have no problems just sitting still and doing nothing (especially with a few glasses of wine in me teehee). Our Saturday varies…and mostly depends on the weather these days! Cannot wait for summer.

fries with stuffing and vinegar?! definitely haven’t heard of that combo before! what kind of vinegar do you douse it with? anyways, this smoothie looks amazing and sounds just as good! i need bananas in my smoothies (they don’t taste sweet or creamy enough without them), so the banana blackberry combo sounds perfect to me (:

Yes! So popular around here and SO good! I use white vinegar and sometimes malt (huge vinegar fan). I love bananas in my smoothies too – they make all the difference, don’t they? Thanks Heather 🙂 Happy Monday!

These smoothies look as perfect as your Saturday sounds! I love going back to the town I grew up in, which is just 20 minutes away! 😉 hahaha! The new restaurants are the bomb – and some of the old are perfectly nostalgic! I don’t know where to begin with this smoothie – color, flavor, ease… It’s all I want in my morning meal! Thanks for sharing, dear! Have a great week! XOXO

My blender is super old and is really starting to protest every time I make a smoothie, so I haven’t been making them lately. Clearly it’s time to get a new blender because I NEED this in my life! Blackberries are my favorite–that color! Those fries you had over the weekend sound ridic! I wish I could say I did anything half as fun as eating something like that but nope, just packing, packing, and more packing. Have a great week, Dawn!

It sounds like you had a really fun weekend! We went out of town to a beer festival and had a blast. I’ve never seen Girls, but sounds to me like I should check it out. I do remember all those lazy Saturday mornings watching cartoons. Those were the days. I’m so glad you were able to get a new blender so you could make these smoothies with your million dollars worth of blackberries. I LOVE that color!

Saturdays are definitely days to cherish Dawn! So awesome that you can get to your home town and eat at a favorite local joint on the same weekend. Very special. I hear you about ‘fighting’ the blender:) I pretty much make smoothies using a handheld one lately. Takes no time at all to clean it 🙂 Congrats on your new one!

  12. Shashi at Savory Spin says:

Dawn, I couldn’t agree more – coffee house smoothies are insanely priced and they tend to have ALL that sugar in ’em – this one is not only gorgeous to look at but is so healthy and tasty too! Yay for a new blender ! BTW, I know what you mean ’bout getting sad when a show ends – last month, our fav show “Vampire Diaries” ended – as in kapeesh – no more running into the filming crew in Covington GA (they filmed locally) – no more Friday nights catching the latest episode – no more season parties – GAH – we were sad – still are… we just need to find a GREAT how again! I haven’t watched Girls or Into the Badlands – maybe I should?
I’ve never had fries with gravy and vinegar, either – GAH – I need to rethink referring to myself as a food blogger! But – I have entertained a mean craving that didn’t go away till I gave into it! I wish it had been for a healthy smoothie – but it was for chocolate cake! 🙂
Hope your week is off to a wonderful start! xo

    • Girl Heart Food says:

High five, girl! Thank you!! Too bad about your show! You’ll have to find another one 🙂 It’s especially nice when there’s a little tradition of watching it too – sitting back, having a snack….something to look forward to. The little things, ya know? What? You’ve never had fries with gravy and vinegar (dressing too?). Girl, you need to get on that! If you ever visit here, this is the place to get it. I have dreams about those fries, lol. Cheers to a great week, my friend! xo

Our weekend was super busy, but Boy and I managed to squeeze in lunch at one of our favorite restaurants and we dined al fresco, so it made ALL the crazy worth it. I’m pretty easy to please. 🙂 I haven’t seen the season finale of Girls yet, but I’m SUPER sad the show is over. Womp Womp. Aaaand I haven’t seen the badlands. Boy keeps bringing it up, but I didn’t love the trailer so I keep saying NO. lol. Obviously I need to watch it if you recommend it!! 🙂 Anyways, yay for pretty smoothies!! The color of this one DEFINITELY makes me smile! And the flavors sound scrumptious! I mean, blackberry, ‘naner, and coconut!? YES please! Cheers, lady! xo

Sounds like you had a good weekend, Dawn! It’s always a blast to go back to your hometown and visit those special places. And those fries sound AMAZING! They don’t make those like that in Chicago, but they should…I’m in love with the sound of those! And I would LOVE to go back to being a kid and watch Saturday cartoons with my bowl of sugar-loaded cereal. Those were the days! And yay for a new blender and ALL the berries! Don’t you just want to whip up everything now? I’m absolutely LOVING this gorgeous smoothie! That color and flavor has me hooked, plus, you just can’t beat five ingredients. Sounds pretty good for a Monday! Pinning this beauty! Hope your week is off to a great start!
