Sweet-n-Tart Cranberry Smoothie

This Sweet-n-Tart Cranberry Smoothie is where it’s at, my friends!  There’s only 6 ingredients (and that’s including ice) and it is absolutely chocked full of goodies, including cranberries, strawberries and Kefir milk…not to mention that it’s gluten free & refined sugar free!  Makes for the perfect breakfast or afternoon pick-me-up.

Hey everyone!  How has September been treating you so far?  How was your long weekend?  We had a pretty low key one.  The weather was amaaaazing, we made lots of good eats, that’s for sure.  Towards the end of the weekend, hubby was, like, ‘Dawn, you have to get out of the kitchen!  You can’t make anything else. There’s just so much food!’  Maybe I like cooking more than the actual eating part?  Naaaah 😋  My love of food is definitely one reason why I work out regularly, tho😜  Speaking of working out, hubby and I are thinking about getting one of those water rowers.  Have any of you heard of them or tried?  They are supposed to be an awesome workout for legs, core and arms so I’m all over that!

Oh, we watched a wicked show this weekend, too!  The second season of Narcos was just released on Netflix this past Friday and we literally blew through it!  It’s mostly subtitles and that may turn some people off, but, honestly, after watching it for a bit, you even forget that they are there.  I think that the second season was even better than the first.  Definitely recommend that one if you’re looking for a new show to watch 👍

Ok, onto the recipe, shall we?  This Sweet-n-Tart Cranberry Smoothie was inspired by  a few things.  The simplest is, well, my love for smoothies.  Next to that, is the fact that a had a ginormous bag of frozen Costco sized bag of cranberries in my freezer<——my excitement of food got the better of me there.  And, finally, the main reason for this Sweet-n-Tart Cranberry Smoothie is that I have been so freaking sick of my regular ol’ breakfast lately.  I said to hubby ‘I just can’t eat it anymore; I just can’t.’

Sweet-n-Tart-Cranberry Smoothie - girlheartfood.com

Basically during the week days, it’s a pretty boring, basic breakfast.   Something to grab and head out the door, know what I’m sayin’? And, it goes a little something like this – coffee, crunchy breakfast bar, and a piece of cheddar cheese.  So exciting, hey?  You know what?  I don’t even know how long I’ve been having this.  Probably for years.  Yes, you read that right…YEARS!  Ok, it has been good, but just last week I was thinking I just can’t eat this anymore; I’ve reached my breakfast bar breaking point.  Now, I’m just trying to mix things up a bit so enter Sweet-n-Tart Cranberry Smoothie.  Hallelujah!  What do you guys like for breakfast?

Sweet-n-Tart-Cranberry Smoothie - girlheartfood.com

Like most smoothies, this takes, like, 5 minutes to make (or even less than, really) and it is super tasty.  I used cranberries, of course, but also some strawberries to counterbalance the tartness of the cranberries and a super ripe banana to add that creamy texture I love.  For the milk component, I used Kefir milk.  Now, I don’t know if you can recall when I first tried Kefir milk…..as explained here.  It definitely wasn’t love at first taste, I can tell you that.  However, me and Kefir milk have become friends.  I understand it.  It has so many goodies chocked in there and you pretty much can’t even taste the strong yogurteyness (<—-totally made that word up) that is Kefir.  And, if you do not want to use that stuff, simply swap out for your favourite milk.  No biggie.

Sweet-n-Tart-Cranberry Smoothie - girlheartfood.com

The end result of this smoothie is something that is slightly sweet, but definitely a bit tart.  And that colour is just amazingly beautiful  💗  We eat with, or shall I say drink with, our eyes and this is just so preeeeety, wouldn’t ya say?

Anywho, hope you get a change to throw this Sweet-n-Tart Cranberry Smoothie into your Fall mix.  Until next time, take care and chit chat again soon 🙂

love narcos! we obsessively binged season 1 and haven’t gotten to season 2 yet. i need a cold rainy weekend to hunker down and watch. glad to hear you weren’t disappointed. and now for this smoothie. the cranberry in this is so smart. i think the tartness must balance the sweetness from the maple syrup and banana so well. can’t wait to try!

Narcos is the best, itsn’t it? I loved season 2 just as much or more than season 1 so I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I’ve heard that they’ve already confirmed two more seasons 🙂 Thanks so much for the smoothie love! Hope you get a chance to try soon. Have a great upcoming weekend, Cathy!

This smoothie looks AHH-MAZING! I love cranberries – I have a few bags of them in my freezer yet so I’ve been a busy bee baking with them. Maybe I’ll switch it up and try this smoothie!

I hear ya about breakfast boredom. We have chickens so I eat eggs often. If not eggs, then grits or oatmeal. Or I skip it all together and just drink coffee. Probably time to mix it up…

Hope you have a wonderful week ♥

  3. Stephanie | The Foodie and The Fix says:

I’ve never watched Narcos, but I’ll have to keep that in mind! I’m in the middle of “The Night Of” right now and loving it. This is THE prettiest smoothie, Dawn! Also, I just want to say that I get excited like that over cranberries too, they’re one of my all-time favorite things. I love that pop of tart that they add, it’s the best! For some reason though, I’ve never thought to put them in a smoothie, so you might just be a freaking genius! Can’t wait to try this, pinned!

    • Girl Heart Food says:

I’ll have to check that show out – ‘The Night Of.’ I’ve heard a few people talk about it now and say it was good 🙂 Always open for new show suggestions! Thanks so much for the sweet comment, Stephanie, and the Pin! Appreciate it! Have a great upcoming week 🙂

Rowing sounds like a serious workout – you go girl! We just finished Stranger Things so we may have to check out Narcos. So many good shows, so little time… kinda like, so much food, so little time… 😉 I definitely have times where I just have to stop cooking cause we’re never gonna eat it all! I’m already excited for all the cranberry deliciousness and this smoothie sounds amazing! Pinned! Have a fabulous weekend! XO

Hi Dawn, Just landed on your blog, and totally loving it. Never ever had cranberries in a smoothie. The novelty of it makes me want to go back to smoothie breakfasts! Thanks for sharing.

    • Girl Heart Food says:

Hi Jenny, thank-you SO much!! Really appreciate it & it’s kind of you to say! The cranberries are pretty tasty in there and I just love the colour 🙂 Smoothies have been my go-to lately! Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a great weekend!

  6. Sarah @ Champagne Tastes says:

Ooo I have frozen cranberries in my freezer RIGHT NOW!!! I’m a cranberry fiend lol.
So my hubs loves keifer- just straight- but drinking it that way makes me a little gaggy. (I’m not a yogurt fan).. But I bet in a smoothie it would be fantastic! I keep trying to drink it- it’s so good for you!

  7. Kate @ Framed Cooks says:

Breakfast bar breaking point – you crack me up! But I know what you mean, and this smoothie looks so healthy and good, especially now while the weather is still hazy/hot/humid. Yum! Meantime we have just started Stranger Things on Netflix – not sure yet but I am hanging in with it for now… 🙂

What! The 2nd season of Narcos is out! I’m so on it! Ok so now onto what’s really important… I love smoothies in the morning but I always make the same one over and over again. It’s good, but a girl has got to get some variety! I’m all about this sweet/tart treat and with fall just around the corner I’m loving the use of cranberries! Delish girl!

Thanks so much, Tracy! I’m only new on the kefir train and I didn’t like it at first. Now, I do 🙂 And you can certainly substitute with another milk here if you wish, though I think the kefir adds to the creaminess of the smoothie. Have a lovely upcoming weekend, girl!

  9. Sues says:

Cranberry season is my favorite!! I try to buy lots and keep them frozen all year round so I can throw them into my green smoothies for some extra kick. But I think I’d like a totally cranberry-based smoothie even better. And who wouldn’t love that color?!

  10. Miriam - londonkitchendiaries.com says:

We are having a beautiful September here in London so far – nice and sunny, I hope it will stay this way for a little bit longer. We have just started the first season of Narcos – there might be a risk that we will get slightly addicted to it 🙂 What a great and healthy pick me up smoothie – the colour is great and with just 6 ingredients a breeze to make! I am a big fan of kefir milk – so healthy as well!

    • Girl Heart Food says:

I know what you mean, Annie!! I love the colour too…so preeeeety 🙂 Sounds like you had a wonderful weekend and how sweet of your daughter to surprise you for your special day. I saw some of your pics that you shared on social media and you certainly have a beautiful family, all so happy 🙂 The weather cooperating was a definite bonus, but I’m pretty confident you guys would have had a wonderful time regardless 😉 Thank you for the sweet comments, my friend. Have a lovely week too! xoxo

I’m always looking for new shows to watch – so I’ll definitely have to check out Narcos! I’ve heard good things about it. Sounds like you had a great weekend too. I absolutely love kefir, I got hooked on it a few years ago and have never looked back. Also – love that you used cranberries, I never really have thought about adding them to a smoothie, and now I definitely need to, because this sounds so refreshing!

Hope you’re having a great week Dawn!

Narcos is pretty great and they’ve confirmed for two more seasons! Yipeeee 😀 Weekend was definitely great….long ones are always the best and that one extra day makes ALL the difference, doesn’t it?

Thanks so much for the kind words, Michelle. Have a great week too 🙂

    • Girl Heart Food says:

It’s a great show, Megan! I hope you like it! We watched all of the second season over the long weekend 🙂 Love cranberry too so it was super nice to have in a smoothie and mix it up a bit! Thanks so much…have a wonderful week 🙂

    • Girl Heart Food says:

Thank you, Teri! Happy you like the recipe! Narcos is such a great show, isn’t it? Just heard that it has been confirmed for two more seasons, so that’s pretty exciting! I haven’t seen The Night Of, but always on the look out for new shows to watch. We really enjoy The Strain as well. Hope you have a wonderful week 🙂

  13. Christy Spurlock says:

I’m also very tired of the breakfast bars and this look DELISH! I don’t have any kefir milk until my next grocery trip so what could I use until then. Definitely saving for later.

    • Girl Heart Food says:

Thanks so much, Christy! Kefir milk is quite thick and has a strong yogurt taste. It adds to the creamy consistency of the smoothie, but any milk would work perfectly fine. I find that soy milk is quite creamy as well, but regular milk would work or almond milk. Thanks so much for stopping by. Enjoy 🙂

    • Girl Heart Food says:

Thanks girl! I totally overate on the weekend too, but that’s what long weekends are for, aren’t they? Hehehe…:D I enjoy working out, but it’s also a way for me to eat what I like without feeling too bad, lol. Narcos was AWESOME! Loved it. I just heard that there’s gonna be two more seasons!! I thought that there would be another one for sure. Seems like we like a lot of the same shows 😉 Have a great week!

  14. Demeter | Beaming Baker says:

Dawn, the second I saw this smoothie on Twitter, I just starting gushing over how pretty the color was! 🙂 And seriously, is there anything better than a smoothie than can make you smile?
Okay, “There’s sooo much food:” What the?!?? No. Such. Thing. Tell hubby he can skedaddle while you and I have a girls’ night and make ALL the things. 🙂 I can’t wait to hear all about the water rower! You totally have to post a pic of that, for sure!
Breakfast bar breaking point: Lololol. Who knew there was such a thing? Well, if I had one or three of these smoothies, I’d def ditch the regular ol’ bfast standby, that’s for sure! Pinning of course. Muah! xoxo

    • Girl Heart Food says:

Your comments are the sweetest and funniest, Demeter, and they always make me smile 🙂 I know, right? There can never be TOO much food, can there? Hehehehe…girl’s night suggestion sounds super fun! Great idea. I’ll definitely have to send you a pic of the water rower. I’m actually pretty excited about it….just looking into some more, but almost there 😉 Now, I’ll be able to row off the calories instead of run them off, lol 😀 Glad you got a laugh out of the ‘breakfast bar breaking point.’ It’s probably because I’ve literally had the same one for soooo long. Just tired of it! Thanks so much for the Pin, my friend. You’re the best! xoxo

  15. Gayle @ Pumpkin 'N Spice says:

I can’t believe Labor Day has come and gone…the last unofficial weekend of summer. I am excited for ALL things fall, though! This cranberry smoothie looks SO good, Dawn! I’ve only used cranberries in a smoothie once before, so you are reminding me that I need to do that again, and soon! Love the combination of sweet and tart. Gorgeous color, too! Pinned, of course! Hope your week is off to a good start!

    • Girl Heart Food says:

I can’t believe labour day has come and gone either! I’m excited for the Fall too! Do you know what? Hubby and I were even just talking about the holidays last night…gasp!! But before that, all things Fall, right 😉 ? Thanks for the smoothie love, my friend, and for the Pin. Much appreciated. Have a fantastic week!

  16. Kevin | Keviniscooking says:

Narcos is next on the list, but currently binged out VEEP and finished House of Cards (water rower!) and am working on my Masterpiece Mysteries of Inspector Lewis. Would you believe I have a smoothie/protein shake EVERY morning and for lunch. Except weekend. You read that right and dinners are THE meal. Otherwise I’d have nothing to show you guys on the blog! I am a huge cranberry fan and this sound tart and delicious. 🙂

I’ll have to check out VEEP. Couldn’t get into House of Cards, but I think there was a bunch of other shows on at the time. Yes, he does have the water rower!! Funny thing. I have been having smoothies a lot lately for breakfast. It definitely is a nice (and much needed) change up and I love how I can pretty much throw anything in the blender and way to go. I would get hungry around 10am so I sometimes put a little protein powder in there for good measure 🙂 Thanks so much, Kevin!

  17. karrie @ Tasty Ever After says:

We had total food (and drink) overload this weekend. It was so outta control, gurl! I’ve decided to go back on a detox clean eating plan for at least 2 weeks to recharge. Your cranberry smoothie fits in perfectly with that plan so I’m going to try this tomorrow morning . Will have to substitute homemade almond milk with the kefir milk because it’s what I have on hand. Yum! Can’t wait until tomorrow morning 🙂

  18. Cheyanne @ No Spoon Necessary says:

Yay to a great weekend with tons of food! We are obviously cut from the same cloth, because “too much food” never can happen if you ask me! 😉 Boy and I started Narcos a while ago, but he didn’t like the subtitle thing, and while I thought it was a good show, I kind of had to be in the mood to watch it… needless to say we have yet to finish the first season. Oops? 🙂 Anyways, these smoothies are SO pretty!! And I love that they are only 6 ingredients AND that you used Kefir milk!! I bet these taste better than they look!! Cheers, dear!

I know, right? I have so much stuff in the fridge, I won’t have to cook all week! Haha…I just get so excited. I can understand that he wasn’t fussy on the subtitles of Narcos, but I found that I just got used to it. I’m sure a lot of people wouldn’t be fussy, though. Second season was just as good, or better than, the first. Thanks so much for the smoothie love, girlie! I just love the colour too. Now, if I could just get that as a nail polish colour, lol 😀 xo

  19. David @ Spiced says:

Thanks for the Narcos recommendation. Laura watched the first season, and she told me she’d go back and watch it again so that I could get up to speed…but I wasn’t really sure. We spent the weekend with friends and then relaxed on the couch yesterday watching Breaking Bad. (Yup, we’re a couple years behind there!) I hear ya on the breakfast routine…sometimes you just HAVE to mix it up. This smoothie sounds like an excellent way to do that. And I agree with you on kefir. I’ve tried to once, and I didn’t love it. I’ll have to give it a try again sometime. 🙂

I hope you enjoy Narcos. It really was good and hubby really enjoyed it too. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Sounds like you had a nice, relaxing weekend! Breaking Bad is pretty awesome too. I found that once it got going, we couldn’t stop watching it. We didn’t watch it until later on too based on a recommendation. So many shows, so little time, lol 😀 The Kefir is really hidden in this smoothie. With so much flavour from the cranberries, you really don’t know it’s there, but it is so good for ya. Hope you get a chance to try the recipe 🙂 Thanks David!
