Hi guys!  How was your weekend? So before I get on with this Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp, I have an important (aka not so important question) to ask you.  Ready?

Ok, as hubby and I were browsing the other night what to watch on the tube (and in a constant search for the new show) we came across Friends from College on Netflix; this is a Netflix original and the first season had just been released.

‘Oh’, I said, after about 15 minutes of searching.  ‘How about that one?’

Hubby responded by saying ‘Oh, yeah, I watched part of that one.’

‘Cool, cool cool…..um, what?  You started a show without me?’

‘Well, I only watched the first 10 minutes.’

‘Hmmmm……ooooooook.’

And, then, we proceeded to watch it.  Catastrophe resolved, lol.

So, the question posed to you guys is should you wait for your significant other to start a show that you potentially both would enjoy?  Similarly, how low should you wait until discussing a show/movie after it’s out to avoid spoilers to friends?  What’s the etiquette here?  I’m sure everyone has an opinion on this! 1, 2, 3 —->GO 😀 !

Ok, now onto the real good stuff and enough with that silly nonsense.  Let’s talk food!  Specifically, Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp!  This recipe is special to me.  You know why?  Because the rhubarb that I used in this recipe came from both our garden and my grandparent’s garden so there’s lots of love in here 🙂Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp {gluten free) - girlheartfood.com

We were visiting my grandparents the other day and they have rhubarb in their garden, but don’t really care for it.  So, what’s a girl to do?  Obviously, I’m not letting any rhubarb go to waste, am I?  My grandfather (aka ‘pop’) gave me what he had and I left with a smile on my face.  As soon as I got home, I made this crisp. So, it’s not farm to table, it’s from Nan & Pop’s garden to my oven 😉

PREPARATION

Like most of the recipes you will find on here, this one is super simple.  You just cut up your rhubarb, slice your strawberries, toss with a few ingredients and top with a crisp made of oats, sugar, nuts, butter and other good stuff.    You know what a secret ingredient is in here?  Well not so secret cause you probably see in the pics, but it’s basil!  Yes, basil!  It adds a lovely little hum to the recipe.  I garnished with some too, but that’s just me wearing fancy pants 😉  I read recently that the word ‘basil’ comes from Greek origin meaning ‘king.’ #FactoidOfTheDay.

I assembled  in cute little dishes so there were individual sized portions (they were about 4 inch diameter each).  You just bake until bubbly and the top has browned.  You may want to wait just a few minutes before digging it cause it’s gonna be hot!

If you’re not a fan of basil, mint would work lovely here too.  What’s your favourite way to use rhubarb?  We have some more in our garden ready to go so I would love to try something else.

Instructions
Crumble
  1. For the crumble combine first 5 ingredients and stir to combine. Cut in butter with pastry cutter or two knives until mixture is crumbly and there are some visible buttery bits. Lay to one side.
Strawberry Rhubarb Filling
  1. Preheat oven to 375F. Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl and stir to combine. Sprinkle corn starch over top and stir to combine.
  2. Distribute Strawberry Rhubarb Filling into dishes (I used 4 small individual sized dishes, about 4 inch circumference). Top with prepared reserved crumble.
  3. Place dishes on a baking sheet just in case there is any bubbling out while baking and bake for 35 minutes. Let cool 5-10 minutes before enjoying. Delicious as is or with vanilla ice-cream!

    J starts shows all the time without me but he just starts them over when I want to watch them, so it’s all good. LOVE that you used rhubarb from your garden and from your Grandparents! So sweet!     Hi Dawn! To answer your question: no! It’s a rule we have that one cannot watch a show (Netflix, PVR) without the other haha! Weird rules you come up with these days 🙂 I love a crisp. So quick and easy to do but soooo good! Especially this one! Especially topped with ice cream I imagine. Love the combination of strawberry and rhubarb. Such a classic. Have a wonderful weekend!

Glad you rescued the rhubarb from your grandparents garden 🙂 It is a tricky question for how long i.e. whether to wait before you start a show on Netflix.     Boy Netflix has so many good ones to choose from these days. Ozark, Bloodline and The Killing are all super good (acting, plot and characters…). There were a few I watched that Dave might not like and when I mentioned I watched one or two he gave it a shot and liked it after all. So I never know. He goes to bed WAY earlier than I so I have time to watch stuff. I usually will watch Previews of new shows together to see if we like it and then if I get the not for me I watch on my own.
    BUT this IS FOR ME! LOVE rhubarb and basil add in the fruit is perfect. Herb with fruit are amazing, right?! Awesome recipe Dawn. Now where’s the video for this? 🙂

      Totally! It’s like the last couple of years, they really brought some great shows!! Just watched the first episode of Ozark and definitely see some great potential…getting some ‘Breaking Bad’ vibes….really liked that one too so we’ll see how it goes 🙂 Herbs with fruit is definitely delicious and we have so many in our garden right now so it’s nice experimenting (though, basil is the hardest for us to grow so we usually grow inside)!     I love this kind of crisp or crumble, I make it so often myself with different kind of fruit or berries, it is always loved by everyone. My husband started watching Game of Thrones two seasons before I did, I had only seen the first 10 minutes from the first episode and said that is too disgusting, nothing for me. I refused to watch it again and then I got to read the books. So I started watching the show, starting season 3 and then again from the beginning and my husband watched with me again. Talk about love! 🙂 If you ask us and my brother-in-law, this is the best show ever!!!! We just saw the first three episodes from the new season last night: AMAZING!!!!

    I don’t have an opinion on spoilers because I’m about 10 years behind the rest of the world. (I just started watching Dexter.) It’s my own fault if someone ruins the end for me, haha :).     So this might be a tad bit surprising – but hardly ever am the one to watch one of the recent shows (the only exception was The Is Us) so, am usually not the one spoiling the outcomes – as for those of my friends who share telly show outcomes with me, I’ve been blessed with a horrid memory so I simply manage to forget when it comes around to me actually watching the said show! 🙂

    There aren’t many shows that my husband and I watch together, so when I find one that I think we’ll both like, I try to wait for him. Haha keyword being ‘try’ because usually I’ll start it and then have him rewatch the first episode with me. And I’m not too worried about my husband starting a show without me, because he mainly watches sports 90% of the time lol. Now onto this crisp…love it!     LMAO! I started friends from college.. but without Boy, because that isn’t a show he would like (he isn’t into any show that condones, or makes light of, people having affairs. Like the show The Affair – I loooove it, he hates it). I wasn’t that into friends from college… like, I’m okay with watching The Affair because it’s a serious show, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the fact that friends from college is a comedy… about an affair. I donno, I just don’t find that funny. So in this case (since I didn’t like the show), I’d say it’s fine your hubs left you out of the loop. LOL! BUT, if it was a good show? He should have ABSOLUTELY told you.. right after her watched the first 10 minutes. 🙂 Did all that make sense???? Anywho, this crisp! Now THIS is something I should probably share with Boy (like a good TV show), but I’d want to hoard it all to myself! SO YUMMY! You just can’t beat strawberries paired with rhubarb!
